Subject: SCSI card
FYI
The SCSI PMAZB card cost $1,392 (new) from DEC and $885 on the used computer
market. DEC will exchange the PMAZC card for the PMAZB card for $385. The
PMAZC card can be used on a DEC 3000/300 but is not compatible on the
DEC 3000/300X. I had a PMAZA card, which was taken out of STEIN over a
year ago. I talked DEC into taking the PMAZA card in exchange which will
leave us with the PMAZC card. Eric Beam's group will make the exchange
Thursday or Friday. PO for the exchange is 215608.

We need a PMAZ-B card for ODETS the new AUSTEN cluster file server.
The PMAZ-C card we have and were expecting to use isn't supported by
VMS 1.5 which we need to use. The CPU box itself is not under contract
or warrantee.

Subject: VMS administrative cluster update

Status of VMS administrative cluster
Ping moved the fmodrawings database from austen to clavell. Some
problems came up dealing with locking and updates of the application.
CA has patches to Ingres on clavell however they will not give them to us
since we have not paid them for a support contract. Ping indicated that
using clavell is a bad idea since we do not have support for Ingres and
the version of Ingres running on clavell is old. Ping will move the
fmodrawings database back to Austen tomorrow.
At this point we are going to try and use Austen (VAX 6530) as the
central backend server for the Ingres databases. Jane (VAX 6440) will be
configured to use Ingres net (or star) to talk to Austen for database
access. Ping feels that Ingres on Austen and Jane is more up to date so
this should work. If this test passes then we will:
1) Rename Austen to Austen1, and create a pointer called Austen to
point to either Austen1 or Jane (using the NDC random name server code).
2) Move some of the databases from Austen1 to Jane.
3) Reconfigure Austen1 to use the same boot disk as Jane (common
startup procedures) which will reduce the number of problems with
modifying one system but not the other.
Time Frame:
1) Ping will move the fmo_drawings database back to Austen.
Finished: 10-18-95
2) Reinstall Ingres on Jane
Finished: 10-19-95
3) Single user test access to fmo_drawings from Jane
Finished: 10-20-95
4) Get dwi application to use network if run from Jane
Finished: 10-27-95
5) Small load test (using real dwi users)
Finished: 11-3-95
6) Modify fms application to use network if run from Jane
(Can be done during load test)
Finished: 11-3-95
7) Load test (using real fms users)
Finished: 11-17-95
8) Modify Austen to use Jane system disk and rename to Austen1.
Get NDC to setup Austen name to point to either Austen1 or Jane.
Finished: 11-24-95
9) Create a new system in the cluster and move current HSC disks
to this system. This will be done during the entire month.
Finished: 12-1-95
