| AWARD DESCRIPTION AND PURPOSE | APPLICATION PROCEDURE |
| Awards to be funded beginning April 1, 2009, with budgets of up to $55,000 (direct costs) annually for 1 or 2 years. Funds can be used for salary, technical support, laboratory supplies, travel, and equipment. The purpose of the awards is to encourage new investigators to pursue careers in STD research. Awardees should plan to use data derived from these funds as the basis for seeking independent funding from NIH or other sources. | Use NIH format (November 2007 revision). Training in the Responsible Conduct of Research 9. Statement by mentor including clear statement of institutional commitment to candidate (1 page) 10. Letter of reference – one letter from someone other than primary mentor--sent directly to Dr. Marrazzo 11. Research Plan Suggested Length A. Specific aims 1/2-1 page B. Background 1-2 pages C. Preliminary studies 2-4 pages D. Research design and methods 4-6 pages E. Human Subjects As needed F. Vertebrate animals As needed G. Literature cited As needed 12. Checklist. Sections (A-D) of the Research Plan must not exceed 10 pages; appendices should not be included. Applicants will need signature (on face page) from the responsible fiscal official for their institution and will need to include a checklist. Animal Care and Human Subjects Review Committee approvals, if applicable, must be obtained before an award can be funded. Proposals involving international sites will require additional clearance from NIH prior to receipt of an award. |
| WHO IS ELIGIBLE TO APPLY | |
| 1.) PhD or MD investigators at U.S. institutions who have recently achieved faculty rank (including "acting" positions), but who have not yet become PI on a STD-related NIH or other grant or contract exceeding $75,000 (direct costs) per year. Applicants must be U.S. citizens 2.) Persons who are making the transition from postdoctoral training to faculty-level appointments at U.S. sites (faculty postion must be effective before commencement of award). | |
| ELIGIBLE TOPICS | |
| Research focused on any aspect (clinical, epidemiology, basic science, behavioral, or public health) of sexually transmitted infections, other than HIV. HIV studies may be part of a proposal only as they relate to, or impact, other STI’s. | |

| Send the compeleted application as follows: (1) Original single paper copy, (2) a single PDF containing the entire application (except letter of reference) on a CD. Letter of reference should be sent separately. All materials must be received by February 1, 2009.
