GENERAL INFORMATIONAbout BALSSI and SWSEELThe Baltic Studies Summer Institute (BALSSI) was founded in 1994 and is at present partially funded by a consortium of several American universities: UCLA, Harvard University, the University of Illinois, Indiana University, the University of Iowa, the University of Michigan, the University of Texas-Austin, the University of Washington, and the University of Wisconsin-Madison. BALSSI was held at Indiana University in 1998, 1999, and 2005, and it returns here in 2006. Intensive
language training has been offered at the Bloomington campus of Indiana
University since 1950. The Summer Workshop
for Slavic, East European and Central Asian Languages (SWSEEL)
provides up to 200 participants in Slavic, East European and Central Asian
languages the opportunity to complete a full year of college language
instruction during a single eight-week summer session, without the burden
of other academic commitments.
Cultural ProgramThe BALSSI instruction program is complemented by a rich variety of cultural programs, including a film series, lectures, concerts, and a Midsummer celebration.
Schedule and FeesScheduleThe 2006 BALSSI begins on Friday, June 16, and concludes on Friday, August, 11. Classes meet Monday through Friday, except on July 4. Specific information on course times and locations can be found below. CostsTuition for all Workshop courses is $226.55 per credit hour for all participants regardless of state origin (except undergraduate residents of Indiana who pay a lower fee based on the student's matriculation date). A single, air-conditioned room cost is approximately $16.40 per day. In addition, residential programs charged a $35 application fee and a $3.50 activity fee. Students living in the dormitory must purchase a minimal meal plan. Housing costs will increase in summer 2006. Please check this space for updated information. In addition to the costs listed above, upon acceptance all students pay a $100 non-refundable administrative fee and miscellaneous university fees (technology fee, heath service, activity, etc.), which in 2006 will be $302.95. FellowshipsA limited number of Foreign Language and Area Fellowships (FLAS) will be available to US citizens or permanent residents who are accepted for enrollment or are enrolled in a graduate program. FLAS fellowships cover tuition and fees and provide an allowance of $2,400 for food and housing. For summer 2006, the American Council of Learned Societies (ACLS) has funded the teaching of first-year Estonian, Latvian and Lithuanian as well as second-year Estonian. Tuition for these courses will be waived for graduate students working in any field related to these languages. In addition, through ACLS funding and other sources, BALSSI will be able to offer a number of fellowships for students in all five language courses. The fellowships will cover tuition (for those who do not qualify for tuition-free status), fees, and a stipend for housing and food. Students wishing to apply for fellowships should check the appropriate box in the application and send in transcripts and letters of recommendation to SWSEEL Director, Ballantine Hall 502, 1020 East Kirkwood Avenue, Bloomington, IN, 47405-7103. Application deadline for Fellowships: April 1, 2006. LoansPlease note that the deadline for financial aid for Indiana University students is March 1. Other students must apply for financial aid at their own schools.
