Major and Minor
requirements
Students pursuing a Major
in Scandinavian Area Studies may specialize in Estonian,
Latvian or Lithuanian studies.
Requirements: 65 credits,
of which 35 are in upper-division courses. The 65 credits
include 30 credits in the chosen language (normally
first- and second-year), a minimum of one course from
each of four area studies fields (Scandinavian folklore
and popular culture, literature, history, society and
politics), and a senior essay.
The Scandinavian Studies
Department also offers an Undergraduate Minor in Baltic
Studies.
Requirements: 35 credits, including 15 credits of
intermediate language courses (ESTO 490, LATV 490, LITH
490). In addition, the student shall complete:

SCAND 344 The Baltic States and Scandinavia (5
credits)
SCAND 345 Baltic Cultures (5 credits)
SCAND 454 Baltic History
SCAND 455 Baltic States since 1991
10 credits of
additional course work in Scandinavian Folklore
and Popular Culture, Scandinavian Literature,
Scandinavian History, or Scandinavian Society and
Politics, at least 5 of which must be on the 300
level or above.
The major or minor course
program must be approved by the Scandinavian Department
Undergraduate Advisor.
