I drove with three guys to the very western point of Latvia- where the Gulf of Riga meets the Baltic Sea. It was really cool- you can see where the two bodies of water meet in a thin white line of surf.

On the way there, we drank in the car, just because it is allowed (not the driver obviously). That was fun just because it felt so wrong.

At the beach, we drank more beers and walked around the area. It used to be a military lookout. A large brick tower and crumbling house stood near the sand. Two guards sat in the building, trying to look important, but they were obviously very bored. Janis and Kaspars asked if they could go inside the tower. The guards said that it wasn’t allowed. So the boys offered them some beer and cigarettes. The guards were bought and took them up the tower.

They even let Kaspars get his picture in the military hat and pretend to talk on the old-style telephone. Bribery at its best in Latvia!

A remains of some structure was rotting into the sand and sea. It is a popular spot to climb and get your picture taken.

The sand on the beach is very fine and light. Small dunes covered with sharp grass line the beach, along with majestic pines.

On the way back, the boys wanted to drink so I got to drive. We went through Roja and saw a small harbor. We also ate at a little Kafenica and Maris got a little splashed with beer over a fight for the tasty apples we found on the ground.
On the way back I realized that the people here are the worst drivers! Driving in Latvia is a death wish, they are total maniacs on the road and it’s hard to see at night because there are no markers. I hope that will be my only driving experience here because it has the worst death rate in all of Europe.
