Grace M. Levings was born in the late 19th century. She and her husband, a prominent doctor, travel from their home in New York throughout the Baltic. This novel chronicles Grace M. Levings experiences while her husband was visiting several different hospitals throughout the Baltic. The book is separated into three sections Norway and Sweden (9-59), Russia and Austria (60-130), and Belgium and Holland (131-166). The pair travels first to Bremen, Germany, then to Copenhagen, Sweden, Petrograd (St. Petersburg), and Russia by way of Finland, Moscow, Russia, Vienna, Austria, Innsbruck, Austria, and Brussels, Germany.

Ms. Levings focuses on chronicling her personal experiences in the different cities they visit. She thoroughly describes physical characteristics about each city as well as the different people and cultural events she encounters.
