Bantu base Afrika!

Bantu base Afrika, or People of Africa, is a Study Abroad program focusing on South Africa and its multilingual society. It is a realization of a dream of its director, Clarissa Surek-Clark: having her University of Washington students experience Ubuntu in the African continent.

  • Clarissa Surek-Clark

    Program Director

    Surek-Clark is originally from Curitiba, in southern Brazil, and she has spent many years living in and researching South Africa. Her academic interests involve languages in contact and translation.

  • Alicia Wassink

    Program Co-Director

    As part of her training as a sociophonetician, Prof. Wassink has lived in Jamaica and England. Her primary research interests include sociolinguistics and Jamaican Creole.
