PLAYER PARTY
Saturday evening, October 12, 2002 at the Furtado Center

PUBLIC EXHIBITION PLAY
Sunday afternoon, October 13, 2002 at the KeyArena

Event Overview
In fall 2002, the University of Washington joins with the greater Seattle community to initiate a full-court press against breast cancer. As UW researchers continue to take aim at breast cancer, our team of dedicated volunteer leaders is planning a spectacular event to raise money to help spur progress toward a cure. The University of Washington is pleased to announce that this year, basketball will take center stage as the Seattle SuperSonics display their physical prowess, taking the fight against breast cancer to the hoop. Basketball legend Earvin "Magic" Johnson, Jr. is one of the many celebrities who will be on hand to lend their support to the cause.

Player Party and Exhibition
The weekend kicks off with an exclusive party at the Sonics training facility featuring a stylish dinner, dancing, and the opportunity to bid on one-of-a-kind auction items - including court time with Sonics players and the chance to join the team on a road trip to play the Los Angeles Lakers. The Player Party is followed the next day by the Sonics' final pre-season scrimmage at KeyArena. Don't miss the opportunity - which is free to the public - to see Seattle's hometown favorites decked out in pink, honoring WNBA star and breast cancer survivor Edna Campbell.

Proceeds Benefit Breast Cancer Care
Proceeds from the party and donations from the basketball exhibition will benefit breast cancer patient care and research at University of Washington Medical Center. The events help raise community awareness about breast cancer - and raise dollars in the fight against this deadly disease.

The Volunteer Leadership
Experienced UW Medicine volunteers Karen Gamoran and Martha Moseley return this year as event co-chairs. They also serve as co-chairs of the UW Breast Cancer Development Council and as active members of the UW Academic Medical Center Development Council.

Background
The 2002 breast cancer basketball event builds on a strong tradition of community outreach and fundraising — a tradition established by a string of successful tennis events. Last year, the highly successful 2001 Schick Xtreme III Tennis Challenge involved tennis greats Andre Agassi, Pete Sampras, Jim Courier, Jonathan Stark, and Martina Navratilova. Community leaders, including Bill Gates and Jeff Bezos, along with other prominent businesspeople, educators, and volunteers, donated their time and money to help raise a total of $1.4 million for breast cancer care and research at UW Medical Center. The two-day event included an exclusive player party and a public tennis exhibition. The player party featured dinner and dancing for 500 people. The exhibition, held at KeyArena, drew 14,000 community members. The weekend was covered by local and national television, and was featured on "Good Morning America" and "Evening Magazine" and in People and Town and Country magazines.
