The goal of my research is to understand the function of the cerebellum. The cerebellum affects every movement by powerfully influencing every major motor structure in the brain. To study the cerebellum I use three techniques. I record the activity of single cerebellar neurons in behaving monkeys, measure movement abnormalities caused by small, temporary lesions of the cerebellum, and trace the anatomical connections between the cerebellum to the rest of the brain. Together these approaches are providing us with an increasing clear picture of what the cerebellum contributes to behavior and how it produces that contribution.
