Achievements
- Five members of the National Academy of Engineering.
- Graduate program ranks 5th in the US News & World Report rankings for Bioengineering and Biomedical Engineering programs. The undergraduate program ranks 12th.
- Twelve UW BIOE predoctoral students received top national fellowships: eight National Science Foundation fellows, two Kirschstein National Research Service Award fellows, and one National Defense Science and Engineering Graduate fellowship.
- Eight BIOE undergraduate students have been awarded prestigious Barry M. Goldwater Scholarships.
- More than 100 undergraduates have been named Mary Gates Scholars; this is a competitive UW scholarship program intended to engage students in activities that enhance their undergraduate experience through research, leadership or venture projects.

Instruction and research comprised 88% of the total BIOE operating expenses in fiscal year 2007.
Direct student support in the form of undergraduate scholarships and graduate student stipends account for about 2% of BIOE’s operating expenses.
