Three Bioengineering Faculty Inducted into AIMBE
NEWS RELEASE
On March 1, 2002, the American Institute for Biological and Medical Engineering (AIMBE) will induct three Department of Bioengineering faculty as fellows during its annual meeting in Washington DC.
Dr. Patrick Stayton, Professor of Bioengineering, is being inducted for advancing molecular bioengineering, integrating protein engineering and synthetic biomaterials, and for exceptional dedication to bioengineering education, outreach, and diversity. Professor Stayton came to the University of Washington in 1992 and was promoted to full professor in 2001. He is Co-Director of the Technology Entrepreneurship Certificate Program (TEC) at the University of Washington, a unique certificate program for graduate students designed to bring MBA and science/engineering graduate students together in a project-oriented setting, which will ensure interactions from different perspectives and provide valuable experience in communication at the interface of business and technology. The TEC program is collaboration between the School of Business, College of Engineering, School of Medicine, and the Center for Technology Entrepreneurship (CTE). Dr. Stayton earned a PhD in Biophysics from the University of Illinois - Urbana-Champaign in 1989.
Dr. David Foster, Research Professor Emeritus of Bioengineering, will be inducted for his leadership in developing simulation systems for worldwide applications to the modeling analysis of medical and biological data. In September 2001, he retired, but remains active at 40%. Dr. Foster joined the Department of Bioengineering at the University of Washington in 1980 and is the Director of the Resource Facility for Population Kinetics (RFPK), a research unit in the Department of Bioengineering sponsored by the Biomedical Technology Program of the National Center for Research Resources (NCRR) at the National Institutes of Health (NIH). RFPK is dedicated to promoting the application of mathematical modeling in biomedical research with an emphasis on compartmental modeling and population kinetics, particularly in metabolic, pharmacokinetic, and pharmacodynamic studies. Dr. Foster earned a PhD in Mathematics from the University of British Columbia in 1969.
Dr. Lawrence Crum, Research Professor of Bioengineering, will be inducted for contributions to diagnostic and therapeutic ultrasound, acoustic cavitation, and high-intensity focused ultrasound (HIFU). Dr. Crum came to the University of Washington in 1992 and is the Director of the Center for Industrial and Medical Ultrasound (CIMU), an inter-departmental, multi-disciplinary organization dedicated to ultrasound education, research, and technology development for the academic, industrial and medical communities. Dr. Crum earned a PhD in Physics from the University of Ohio in 1967.
Other Department of Bioengineering faculty members who are also AIMBE fellows include: Dr. James Bassingthwaighte, Professor; Dr. Allan Hoffman, Professor; Dr. Tom Horbett, Professor; Dr. Lee Huntsman, Provost; Dr. Yongmin Kim, Professor; Dr. Gerald Pollack, Professor; Dr. Buddy Ratner, Professor; Dr. Francis Spelman, Professor Emeritus; and Dr. Paul Yager, Professor.
