We would like to express our sincere thanks to the many people who helped showcase our department and new building for the College of Engineering and Health Sciences open houses April 28 and 29! Special thanks go to major organizers and exhibit volunteers Jacqueline Callihan, Thayne Edwards, Neil Geisler, Kareen Kreutziger, Tekie Mehary, Chris Neils, Kelli Jayn Nichols, Shirley Nollette, Jay Rubinstein, Wendy Thomas, and Jinfei Yu.
Manda Williams will have her PhD qualifying examination Thursday, May 4 at 9:30 a.m. in the Bioengineering Seminar Room (Foege N130A). The title is "Transfection of Dendritic Cells to Prime the Immune System Against Implant-Borne Infection." Drs. Patrick Stayton (chair), James Bryers, and Francois Baneyx (Chemical Engineering and adjunct in Bioengineering) are her qualifying examination committee members. Dr. Paul Yager is her advisor.
Dr. Elias Zerhouni, director of the National Institutes of Health, will present "Medical Imaging: Innovation, Integration, and Improvement" on Monday, May 8 at 5 p.m. in Hogness Auditorium for the Department of Radiology's first annual Albert A. Moss Lecture in Imaging Sciences.
The Bioengineering Seminar meets Thursday, May 4 from 12:30 to 1:20 p.m. in the Bioengineering Seminar Room. Dr. Lee Mitsumori, assistant professor in UW Radiology, will present "Noninvasive Plaque Imaging, from Clinic to Bench."
BIOEN 511, the Biomaterials Seminar, meets Thursday, May 4 from 3:30 to 4:20 p.m. in Benson 117. Fang Cheng, Chemical Engineering graduate student, will present "Characterization of Nitrilotriacetic Acid Self-Assembled Monolayer for Orientation-Controlled Immobilization of Proteins." Allen Taylor, also a Chemical Engineering graduate student, will present "SPR Sensor for Investigating Molecular Chaperone Activity and Detecting Pathogens."
BIOEN 599F, the Nanotechnology Seminar, meets Tuesday, May 2 from 12:30 to 1:20 p.m. in Bagley 260. Dr. Sophia E. Hayes, assistant professor of chemistry at Washington University, will present "Optically-Polarized NMR of 69Ga in Semi-Insulating GaAs and InGaP/GaAs Heterostructures."
Congratulations to Bioengineering graduate students Jeremy Joseph and Lina Nilsson for their selection as Bonderman Fellows. The fellowship provides $20,000 for world travel during the 2006-07 academic year.
Congratulations to Dr. David Baker (UW Biochemistry and adjunct in Bioengineering and Genome Sciences), who has been elected to the National Academy of Sciences for "distinguished and continuing achievements in original research." His group does computational and experimental work with proteins and developed the ROSETTA program for predicting protein structure.
