Dr. James Anderson, Case Western Reserve University "Lymphocyte and Inflammatory Cell Interactions with Biomaterials" Friday, January 11, 2008 |
Dr. Anderson has a PhD from Oregon State University and an MD from the Case Western Reserve University School of Medicine. His lab at Case Western Reserve University's Institute of Pathology does clinical and fundamental studies to investigate inflammatory and wound healing responses to biomaterials, prostheses, and medical devices.
A founding member of the Society for Biomaterials and the Controlled Release Society, Dr. Anderson was elected to the National Academies of Science's Institute of Medicine in 2003. He has received the Elsevier Biomaterials Gold Medal Award and the Chugai Mentoring Award, as well as 10-year funding through the NIH MERIT program. He is consultant to the National Institutes of Health Artificial Heart Program, the Food and Drug Administration, and the International Standards Organization, and is editor-in-chief of the Journal of Biomedical Materials Research.
The Hoffman Lecture honors UW Bioengineering's Dr. Allan Hoffman, now in his 50th year of active research. Dr. Hoffman joined the UW faculty in 1970, and last July received the 2007 Founders’ Award from the Controlled Release Society, recognizing a lifetime of achievement. A colleague called him "the leading authority on biomaterials and carriers for drug delivery, and the most prominent ambassador of the field in the world.” He was among the first to combine drugs, enzymes, and antibodies with thermally reversible polymers and hydrogels. With Dr. Buddy Ratner, Hoffman has co-edited “Textbook of Biomaterials Science,” adopted for use worldwide. He also served for 36 years as a consultant for Alza Corporation on drug delivery system innovations, and he is one of UW Bioengineering’s three NAE members.
