Combined Bachelor/Master of Science in Bioengineering

UW Bioengineering offers a combined Bachelor of Science and Master of Science (B.S./M.S.) degree program in Bioengineering. This accelerated program allows both degrees to be completed within five years. In some cases, the B.S. portion may take longer than four years but the MS portion is strictly limited to one calendar year immediately following completing the B.S.

Students contemplating the B.S./M.S. need an early start in the lab in which they plan to complete the senior capstone project—normally by the beginning of junior year. This early start is necessary to finish a master’s thesis within an additional year. The project will have two defined end-points: one that meets the research and design requirements for the B.S., and another that meets the research requirements for the master’s thesis. The summer following the senior year is usually spent researching and the fifth year is spent on coursework, research, writing and thesis defense.

Curriculum

Individual schedules vary depending on a student’s advanced credit, and ability to simultaneously carry a heavy course load, maintain good grades, and conduct research. Most students use summers to complete the combined degree.

Students may elect to complete one of two program options: Bioengineering Professional Series (BPS) or Program on Technology Commercialization (PTC).
