BackgroundIn fall 2005 UW Bioengineering received a $2.9-million, five-year grant for translational research from the Wallace H. Coulter Foundation. Originally providing $580,000 each year, the grant was recently increased to $1 million per year. Preproposals are due each fall, and full proposals from those invited to apply are due in January (January 31 for 2008). Funding begins April 1. Coulter awards provide approximately $100,000 for a collaborative translational research project led by at least two PIs, one a tenure-track or tenured faculty in Bioengineering and one an investigator with a faculty appointment in a clinical department at the UW. The projects must address unmet clinical needs and have strong potential for clinical impact and improved healthcare. Desirable outcomes include inventions, patents, improved diagnosis and treatment, commercial products, licenses, commercial partnerships, and start-up companies. Funds may be used for salary for faculty, graduate students, and other research staff, but not for administrative support or tuition. Other eligible expenses include supplies, minor equipment, prototyping expenses, imaging time, and travel directly associated with the research activity. Proposal evaluation criteria include scientific merit, health care impact, experience of the investigators, potential for commercialization, and potential for obtaining further support. Dr. Paul Yager, currently UW Bioengineering's acting chair, is chair of the W.H.C.F. Translational Research Partnership at the UW. Current Coulter projects at UW |
