Diversity

Diversity brings a wide range of perspectives to the classroom, and a diverse educational community encourages students to search for new ways to solve problems—and to consider the impact of projects across cultural lines and international borders. We value diversity in our department, and we're committed to providing a nurturing and supportive environment for all members of our community.

UW Bioengineering works actively to ensure recruitment and participation from underrepresented groups. National studies have indicated the crucial need to focus on training women and underrepresented minorities in engineering, to meet the future technical workforce needs of the country. Our department boasts a high percentage of both women graduate students (42.5 percent) and women faculty (7 out of 29 total faculty, or 4 out of 17 tenure-track faculty).

We're committed to recruiting and encouraging talented students and faculty from all backgrounds, as demonstrated by our strong involvement in the BRIDGES grant program, minority student conferences, and the School of Medicine's Biomedical Minority Recruitment Task Force.
