Overview
The MME program is an evening degree program designed to enable local engineering professionals to train in biological and medical fields. Professionals may also complete four certificate programs without applying for degree status.
Program goal: To prepare professionals to develop technologies and products that will become the standard of healthcare in the near future.
Program Requirements
- A bachelor's degree in an engineering or quantitative physical science discipline.
- Three years professional engineering experience by the time of application to the degree (three to five years is suggested).
Applicants whose bachelor's degree is in a biological science or a field different from the normally required bachelor's in engineering or other quantitative discipline (see above) may apply for the Master of Medical Engineering degree program if they meet the prerequisite course requirements for day students in Bioengineering. Please contact Dorian S. Taylor for further information.
Applicants will be evaluated on professional engineering experience, undergraduate GPA, Medical Engineering GPA (if applicable), letters of recommendation, and GRE test scores. Please note that admission to the degree is not guaranteed if you choose to take certificates prior to applying to the Master's program.
Applicants who do not qualify for admission to the MME degree program may be admitted to courses and/or to Medical Engineering Certificate programs.
Note: TOEFL Scores are waived for some students. Please review Graduate School Memorandum No. 8 to see if you qualify.
International Students: This program does not qualify as full-time study, and therefore does not meet requirements for an F-1 visa. However, if you are an F-1 student currently enrolled full-time in another program, OR you are in the U.S. on some other type of visa (not F-1), you may be eligible to take a certificate program or course. For complete details, or to contact an adviser, see Visa Information.
Progression through Program
Non-thesis track requirements (can be completed in 3-4 years):
- Four certificates plus four credits of Bioengineering seminar (offered Winter and Spring only)
Thesis-track requirements (can be completed in 4-5 years):
- Four certificates
- Two credits of Bioengineering seminar (offered Winter and Spring only)
- Nine thesis credits
- A publishable document
- Oral defense of thesis
- Intent to complete the thesis must be declared at the time of degree application or no later than the end of the second certificate, whichever comes first.
- To declare intent to complete the thesis, the student must submit a brief project description and a note of approval from the faculty advisor.
- The thesis content cannot overlap with work done at the student's place of employment.
Certificate Options are:
- Basic Medical Sciences (prerequisite for other certificates; offered annually)
- Medical Diagnostics (offered once every two years)
- Medical Devices and Commercialization (offered annually)
- Biosensors and Biomaterials (online)
Go to: Course Descriptions.
Application Procedures
Students have the option to apply to the Master's program right away or take one to two certificates prior to degree application. If students wish to take one or two certificates before applying to the degree program, they can complete the Basic Medical Sciences Certificate Program (18 credits), then apply for graduate nonmatriculated (GNM) status and earn a second certificate (12 credits) under the GNM status.
Deadline: Aug.20, 2010
