Yongmin Kim honored for distinguished service by Engineering in Medicine and Biology Society

Yongmin Kim, professor in the Department of Bioengineering, has received the 2010 Distinguished Service Award from the Engineering in Medicine and Biology Society. Kim, the past chair of the Department of Bioengineering, was honored for outstanding contributions to biomedical engineering education, the profession of bioengineering, and for service and leadership in EMBS.

The EMBS is part of IEEE, the largest professional society dedicated to advancing technology, with nearly 400,000 members worldwide in fields such as aerospace technology, computer systems, telecommunications, and electrical engineering. The membership of EMBS includes more than 8,000 academic and professional bioengineers around the world.

Kim is a leader in medical imaging and next-generation ultrasound, and directs the Image Computing Systems Laboratory at the UW, a lab that focuses on medical imaging, image processing, and computer architecture. He has a joint appointment in the Department of Electrical Engineering and is an adjunct professor of radiology and of computer science and engineering.

Some of Kim’s recent research involves using ultrasound elastography to analyze the elasticity of thyroid nodules to determine the likelihood of malignancy. Some thyroid nodules can become cancerous, and the project in the Kim lab is aimed at analyzing those nodules less invasively than a tissue biopsy. Kim and his colleagues also have a project using Doppler ultrasound to identify coronary artery stenosis.

Kim first joined EMBS in 1978 as a graduate student, and has been involved in the society ever since. He and his colleagues helped organize the society’s annual conference in 1989 when it was held in Seattle. Kim has served on numerous committees and in leadership roles in EMBS, including president in 2005-6.

Kim and the rest of this year’s EMBS award recipients will be honored at the society’s annual conference this fall in Buenos Aires, Argentina.
