Attendance: Students may attend in-person or watch seminar online for credit, however the number of written critiques required for credit will vary.

Students who attend the lecture in-person:

Please plan to attend a minimum of NINE (9) lectures in person. There will be a sign-in sheet at the entrance to the seminar room, be sure to sign-in. To receive credit, you are expected to write a minimum of TWO (2) 1-page critiques on any of the 9 lectures you attend in-person (guidelines provided below).

If you are unable to attend a lecture, for any reason, please watch the video online and submit a 1-page written critique on that lecture (this will be in addition to the two required written critiques), up to 7 written critiques.

You can use the following table to identify the number of written critiques required for course credit based on number of seminars attended in-person

Students who are unable to attend the lecture in-person:

You are required to watch the lectures online and submit SEVEN (7) 1-page critiques on the weekly lectures during the quarter.

GoPost Discussions (optional):

To facilitate discussion within the Bioen 509 seminar class, we will be hosting discussions using UW’s Catalyst GoPost system. Each week, students are invited to post comments to the class (being on your electronic device(s) during class is RUDE so please post before or after class), or questions targeted to the speaker. An appropriate GoPost comment or question need not be lengthy, but it should be used to provide your thoughts or insight on the topic of a given seminar, questions for your fellow students, or specific questions for the seminar speaker. Comments should be thoughtful and respectful of your peers and the invited speakers.

1-Page critique guidelines:

Your critique should be limited to one page, 11 or 12-pt font (Times New Roman or Arial is preferred), and consist of a minimum of 300 words. THE FILENAME OF YOUR CRITIQUE SHOULD BE “Your Lastname First initial, Lecture # Critique”. For example “Yager P., Lecture 1 Critique.”

Your critiques are due the first day of final weeks for the quarter: https://www.washington.edu/students/reg/calendar.html#final.

Please submit your critiques as a PDF to the online Dropbox: https://catalyst.uw.edu/collectit/dropbox/summary/woodrow/30994

Individual critiques should be submitted to the same Dropbox (e.g., if you have to submit 3 critiques, then there should be 3 individual files in your Dropbox).

The goal of your critique is to reflect on the scientific/technical content of the seminar, identifying what you did and did not understand, and your thoughts on the broader implications of the topic to Bioengineering or Biomedical Science. You can also use this opportunity to address the style of the presentation, what did and did not work for you – but you are encouraged to focus your critique to the technical content. Try to distinguish important principles of the science presented, what you learned, and your perspective on the seminar’s topic.

Note: Feedback will not be provided during the quarter. Grading of all submitted critiques will be completed at the end of the quarter. However, all critiques are read by the instructor.
