Research Internship Program
The goal of this program is to give undergraduates an opportunity to gain first-hand experience conducting biological research. Selected undergraduates are matched with faculty members to either participate in ongoing research projects and/or develop their own projects. Students may work directly with a faculty mentor or with a postdoctoral fellow, technical staff member, or graduate student who is working under the direction of a faculty member.

Committment
Interns will be expected to work in a laboratory for a minimum of three quarters, beginning in either summer or autumn quarter. During the academic year, students will spend 15 hours/week in the laboratory. Students that participate during summer quarter will spend 40 hours/week in the laboratory. All students will write an abstract on their project, prepare a poster, and present their research at the HHMI-sponsored undergraduate symposium during spring quarter.

In addition to time spent in the laboratory, students will take a 1 credit seminar during winter and spring quarters. Students may, with the faculty sponsor's position, enroll in up to 3 independent research credits (BIOL 499) each quarter.

Stipend
During the academic year, students will receive $1250/quarter their first quarter in the program, and up to $1500/quarter thereafter, depending on the student's academic year. During summer quarter, students will receive between $8-10/hour. Students may not combine this award with concurrent Mary Gates awards (or other funding) that directly supports the same laboratory work.

Requirements
This program is only open to currently enrolled University of Washington students. Applicants must have completed the introductory biology series (BIOL 180, 200, 220) by the time they start the program. Juniors are especially encouraged to apply, although sophomores and seniors will also be considered. Preference is given to students who have not had prior research experience and can demonstrate financial or other need.
