The MPSA conference will be preceded by a one-day workshop on Mass Spectrometry. The workshop will take place on the University of Washington campus. Participation in the MPSA conference is not required to register for the workshop.

Goals and Prerequisites: This one-day workshop on the principles of mass spectrometry for protein analysis is appropriate for graduate students, postdoctoral fellows, and faculty. The goal of the workshop is to teach fundamental principles and current techniques that should allow the non-expert to intelligently use mass spectrometry as a tool in their research and to interpret the results of mass spectrometry analysis. Participants should have a general knowledge of protein biochemistry; familiarity with commonly used bioinformatics also may be helpful. Prior knowledge of instrumentation or previous experience with mass spectrometry, while helpful, is not required. Advanced mathematics or advanced computer techniques are not required. The course will not cover other areas of proteomics such as protein separation and fraction.

Instructors: The workshop will be presented by Nicholas E. Sherman, Ph.D. and Robert E. Settlage, Ph.D. Both are highly experienced in mass spectrometry and have taught several highly successful similar workshops. Click here for biosketches of the speakers.

Participation: Workshop size is limited by the size of the lecture hall. Workshop fees and registration are separate from that for MPSA2004.

Fees: The fee for the workshop is $350. The fee does not include housing or lunch; coffee and light refreshments will be available at breaks.

Times: The workshop will begin at 9 AM and will end at approximately 5 PM local time. Click here for a workshop outline.

Information about the location of the workshop will be forwarded upon receipt of your registration. Lodging information is available elsewhere on this website.
