IAPSAP is pleased to announce that, through the generous support of the Department of Energy's office of Biological and Environmental Sciences (BER) and other sponsors, IAPSAP expects to offer fee and lodging waivers valued at ~ $500 to approximately 10 graduate students or postdoctoral fellows toward the costs of attending MPSA2004.

ELIGIBILITY: Applicants must be a full-time graduate student or postdoctoral fellow at a recognized educational or research institution at the time applications are due (June 30, 2004).

SELECTION CRITERIA: Preference will be given to minorities and/or students who demonstrate need and who will make a contribution to the conference through their research (as determined from their application and poster abstract) or can show that attendance is likely to provide significant benefit to their research and/or career plans.

DUE DATE: All application materials must be received by the close of business on Wednesday, June 30, 2004. Applications should be sent by email to the MPSA2004 inquiry address: mpsa2004@u.washington.edu Alternatively, the requested information may be faxed or mailed to MPSA2004, c/o Simple Meetings, PO Box 31623, Seattle, WA 98103 (Fax: 206-706-8476)

AWARDS: Recipients will be selected by a subcommittee of the MPSA Organizing Committee, and recipients and their mentor will be notified by email on or about July 15, 2004. Awards will be provided to recipients during the MPSA2004 meeting as a check in U.S. dollars made payable to the recipient.

APPLICATIONS: Applicants should send the following information:

For emails, the subject line should state: STUDENT TRAVEL AWARD APPLICANT: [your name]

The text, which should be no more than 1 page when printed with a 12 pt font with 1-inch margins, should give:

a) Your name and your affiliation/business mailing address including your business telephone, fax, and email addresses.

b) Your mentor's name (or Department Chair) and contact information.

c) The amount of funds requested (The committee does not anticipate providing awards significantly in excess of $500, but the committee will consider the merits of awards for more than or less than $500.)

d) Please address the following questions succinctly:

- How will I contribute to MPSA2004?

- How will attending MPSA2004 benefit my research/career in science?

- How will a travel award facilitate attending MPSA2004?

- Please state that you are aware that IAPSAP travel awards will not cover the full cost of attending MPSA2004 and that you expect to have the resources to attend the full MPSA2004 meeting if you receive the requested funds.

e) Applicants who plan to present a poster at MPSA2004 should attach the abstract they plan to submit describing their research (not included in the 1 page limit).

f) Applicants should have their mentor or Department Chair send a confirming email/letter that includes the following information:

1) The subject line should state: MPSA2004 Travel Award: MENTOR for [applicant's name].

2) Applicant's name and affiliation

3) Mentor's name and contact information

4) A statement that the applicant is a full time student or postdoctoral fellow (state which); that you are

his/her mentor/Department Chair and that you approve of the applicant's attendance at MPSA2004.

5) A statement that receiving the requested travel funds will contribute to the applicant's ability to attend MPSA2004.

6) Succinctly state why attending MPSA2004 will benefit the student's/postdoc's research/career.
