We are interested in increasing opportunities for ornithology students to expand their professional networks. Several avenues will be open at the Seattle AOU to facilitate this:

  • Through the pre-registration process, we will be recruiting established professionals willing to be student mentors during the meetings. This is an opportunity for students to meet an experienced person who not only shares common research or career interests, but can also introduce the student to other veterans in the field.

  • Extra time is being set aside just before the Poster Reception for students and mentors to introduce themselves and to hone in on interests. The Poster Reception, which will be on Thursday night, will be an excellent opportunity for mentors to introduce students to other established professionals and potential mentors and to discuss current state-of-the-fields of interest.

  • For a less structured opportunity, AOU Seattle would like to try something new to encourage professional contacts and networking skills-- critical to success in any field. Each student is invited to indicate a "big-wig" with whom she would like to meet. AOU Seattle will then notify those students with a common person in mind; it will be the students' responsibility to move forward in coordinating the lunch meeting. We have deliberately scheduled 90-minute lunch breaks for two days (Friday and Saturday) to create "Take-a-Big-Wig-to-Lunch" opportunities. This is a unique opportunity for students to make contact with well-known ornithologists from other institutions.

Both AOU and SCO/SOC offer awards for presentations; AOU also offers a travel award. Please see details at the AOU Program Coordinator's website.
