Symposium Logistics

Accommodations, packing, diet, directions, and other useful information

The BRAINS 2014 Symposium is scheduled to take place at the IslandWood Conference Center located on beautiful Bainbridge Island, a 35-minute ferry ride from Downtown Seattle. Please check back for updated logistics closer to the date of the symposium.

Packing tips: We will be staying at IslandWood Conference Center on Bainbridge Island. Participants will be sharing rooms in a hotel lodge-like setting. (See for pictures.) Bedding, linens and towels will be provided, but you need to pack your own toiletries, including soap and shampoo. Dress will be casual. Please also check the Bainbridge Island, WA weather forecast. We will mostly be inside, but we will going outside periodically during the symposium, and there will be an outside tour on Saturday. If you plan on jogging or walking around the grounds before or after the symposium day, you may want to bring a headlamp or flashlight to help guide your way. There are 255 acres and 7 miles of trails on the campus.


Transportation: BRAINS has arranged for shuttle transportation from the Sea-Tac airport to the downtown Seattle ferry terminal and from the Bainbridge Island ferry terminal to the conference site. The last BRAINS Shuttle leaving Sea-Tac airport will depart approximately 1:00 pm. A the follow up email coming on Friday or Monday will have details about your shuttle assignments.

Shuttle riders will be walk-on ferry passengers and will need a ticket for passage to Bainbridge Island. Paid ferry tickets for our BRAINS participants and panelists will be provided to you at the airport. If you are not meeting at the airport, we will email you the ferry ticket ahead of time. Please print the ticket and have it available at the ferry terminal. BRAINS-paid walk-on passenger ferry tickets will be available for the 1:10 and 2:05 ferries to Bainbridge Island. Upon arrival at the Bainbridge Island ferry terminal (35 minute ferry crossing), a shuttle will then take BRAINS participants and panelists from the Bainbridge Island ferry terminal to IslandWood.

Return shuttles from Islandwood to the Bainbridge Island ferry terminal and from downtown Seattle ferry terminal to Sea-Tac airport will also be provided. We expect to take the 1:10 ferry back to Seattle on Sunday, September 28.

Pre-arranged shuttle service will only be available for the ferry times indicated here. Ferry tickets will not be covered for alternate ferry times unless the change is due to a flight delay or cancellation.


Symposium Schedule: Please note that all participants, panelists, and facilitators are required to stay on-site for the duration of the symposium. Details about arrival and departure times will be distributed after being accepted into the program.

Dietary Restrictions: Dietary rescrictions should have been noted in the Islandwood survey. If you indicated a dietary restriction in the survey, please check in with IslandWood personnel at each meal or snack so we can be sure you receive your appropriate meal/snack.


Driving Directions: For those of you not taking the transportation arranged by BRAINS, you can find directions to get to IslandWood on Bainbridge Island here: You will need to pay car fare for the ferry.
