Symposium Logistics

Accommodations, packing, diet, directions, and other useful information)

The BRAINS 2013 Symposium is scheduled to take place at the IslandWood Conference Center located on beautiful Bainbridge Island, a 35-minute ferry ride from Downtown Seattle. Please check back for updated logistics closer to the date of the symposium.


Packing tips: Dress is casual. You will need to bring your own toiletries. Please check the weather prior to your trip. Participants will be sharing rooms in a hotel lodge-like setting. Please check the weather forecast to see if rain is likely, as we will be moving between different buildings throughout the symposium. You may want to bring a headlamp or flashlight if you plan on walking or jogging around the grounds after the symposium day. There are 255 acres and seven miles of trails on the campus.

Transportation: BRAINS has arranged shuttle and ferry transportation for participants and speakers. Shuttles will depart the SEA airport for transport on the 1:10 and 2:05 p.m. Bainbridge Island ferries on Thursday, January 10th. Shuttle service back from Islandwood to the Ferry Terminal and from the Ferry Terminal to SEA airport on January 13th will be arranged at the Symposium. The ferry from Seattle to Bainbridge Island takes approximately 35 minutes. BRAINS will provide walk-on ferry tickets to all participants and speakers taking designated ferry rides.

Symposium Schedule: Please note that all participants, panelists, and facilitators are required to stay on-site for the duration of the symposium. Please arrive at Seattle-Tacoma International Airport no later than 12:30pm in order to arrive at the symposium site on time. The symposium will run from 4:00pm on Thursday, January 10th through 12:30pm on Sunday, January 13th. Following the symposium, a free shuttle will transport participants to the Seattle-Tacoma airport with an expected time of arrival of 2:30pm.

Participant Poster Guidelines: Each participant (not panelists) should remember to bring a poster that describes your research interests. It should be 2 ft wide and 3 ft high (portrait style). Please include your name, current institution and a small photo of yourself. This poster is meant to generate discussions about research interests and potential collaborations more than to showcase particular results.

Dietary Restrictions: If you indicated a dietary restriction, please check in with IslandWood personnel prior to each meal or snack. Please note that all food served is organic and, when possible, local to the Bainbridge Island area.
