The social marketing of folic acid & the effectiveness of the recent regulation of folic acid fortification

Research focuses on the social marketing of folic acid, and the effectiveness of the recently implemented regulation of folic acid fortification. This project is best suited for a student interested in the social issues surrounding health behaviors. This project is appropriate for a student who wants to pursue a career in research in human populations. The project deals with identifying the factors supporting the FDA's recent regulation to fortify all cereal and grain products with folic acid. The student will learn about folic acid's effect on reducing risk for neural tube defects, and will characterize the effectiveness of the legislation. The student will conduct a study of distributors of cereal and grain products in the Seattle area and assess what segment of the population might not have access to folic acid fortified foods. The implications for preventing neural tube defects will be discussed. Experience will be gained in research design, data collection, and data analysis using MSAccess and MSExcel.
