Longitudinal study of inhalant use among high-risk youth

The prevention projects of the multi-faceted Reconnecting Youth Prevention Research Program (RY) involve a partnership between school personnel, youth, and parents to develop and test school-based models for preventing drug abuse, school dropout, depression, and suicide behaviors among high-risk youth. Because RY is comprised of several projects that are in various stages of completion, the intern will have the opportunity to participate in a rich and comprehensive range of research activities. These will include; organizing for data collection, collecting data from subjects, processing data as it arrives, analyzing a subset of the data to assist in all phases of composing an article for publication. While working with this prevention program, the intern will learn and refine her data collection, data management, analysis and writing skills. These opportunities will also increase her proficiency in using multiple computer programs including SPSS, Word, and Excel. In particular, the intern will gain experience in organizing and planning for large-sample data collection, and she will develop skills and strategies for engaging and collecting data with high risk youth. She will participate directly in formulating, planning, and carrying-out analysis for a research article. These experiences will enhance her skills in data management (cleaning and verification), data analysis (using and interpreting a variety of statistics including descriptive statistics, cross-tabulation and measurements of association, correlation and multiple or logistic regression), and writing for publication (conducting literature reviews, summarizing key findings, describing and interpreting results).
