1999 Summer Research: Richard Wallace

Interdisciplinary studies of nutrition and sustainable food resources

I am working with two experiments in Nutritional Science utilizing rainbow trout at the research animals. This work is directed towards finding the affects of vitamin and other essential element deficiency, both as improving aquaculture methods and understanding of animal, human included organ and tissue reaction. The data and analysis has use in our interdisciplinary studies involving Health Sciences and Fisheries. I have designed the experiments and am adjusting the trial to changing conditions-summer water temperature rise is a challenge. With the help of my faculty mentor, graduate students and hatchery personnel I am perfecting my research methods. Library investigation is revealing information on past studies of this nature and the affects of deficiencies on the various organs of animals. Extensive entry and maintenance of data, and analysis, using Excel and SPSS is broadening my ability in statistical work. We hope to provide data and viable animals for students in later quarters.
