2000 Summer Research: Rosaelia Morfin

Breast and Cervical Cancer

I will be involved in several research projects that will enhance my knowledge on cervical and breast cancer amongst minority women. I will be a research assistant under the supervision of Dr. Fran M. Lewis. One of the projects works with Hispanic women with high risks of cervical cancer in the Yakima Valley. In this research, I am going to be learning and participating from Dr. Fran, how to write a professional paper and be submitted into a journal. The second research project is called Enhancing Connections. I will be exposed to a teamwork atmosphere. Analyzing how a research is created from the start, I will learn how important it is for each team member to take on responsibility and leadership. This project also gives me a first hand look at what a nurse researcher does. I will be taught to create intervention methods that will be used in the Enhancing Connections project. The third project deals with the utilization of mammograms in African American women. Apart from the three major research projects, Dr. Fran will be teaching me how to technically transcribe interviews from patients. Also, I will be taught inductive coding which also corresponds to the interviews of the patients. By working on a research team, I will analyze how important it is to work as a team and how to organize a research project. I will also gain knowledge on many important issues dealing with cervical and breast cancer in minority, low-income women.
