Since joining the company in January 2001, McGavick has emphasized returning Safeco to its long tradition of excellence. Under his leadership, Safeco has taken aggressive actions to improve the performance of its core business lines, strengthen its balance sheet and reduce expenses while investing in training and new technologies. Safeco has also sharpened its focus by selling its Life & Investments division and returning to its roots as a Property & Casualty insurance company.

Prior to Safeco, Mr. McGavick held a number of senior executive positions with CNA Financial Corporation. His early career was spent in public affairs, where he held a number of high-profile positions, including chief of staff for U.S. Senator Slade Gordon. A native of Seattle, Mr. McGavick graduated from the University of Washington in 1983 with a degree in Political Science.
