Admissions Overview

Admission to the Undergraduate Program in the UW Business School is competitive. The program admits for autumn quarter only, and on average 50-60% of applicants - between 650 and 750 - are admitted.

Application Workshops

Application workshops provide detailed information about the process of applying to the Business School.

There will be application workshops on Thursday afternoons, from February 3rd through February 17th in Savery Hall room 249 from 3:30 to 4:20 . Seating, which is limited, is on a first come basis. Fire codes prohibit standing room so doors will be closed once all seats are filled.

As more workshops are confirmed, the updated schedule will be posted on this site.

Minimum Academic Requirements
To be eligible to apply to the Business School, a student must have a minimum 2.5 cumulative GPA for :

  • all college credits
  • all required business course credits
  • all UW credits
  • all UW business course credits

Prerequisite Course Requirements - Upper Division Admission Group (UAG)

The majority of students in each entering class are admitted as part of the UAG. This group consists of students at the UW and other accredited colleges and universities who apply in the spring of their sophomore year or later for admission the following fall. Students applying to the UAG must have a total of 60 college credits at the time they apply, including calculus, college-level English composition, financial accounting, and microeconomics or macroeconomics.

Prerequisite Course Requirements - Early Admission Group (EAG)

UW students who began their coursework at the UW as freshmen may apply in the spring of their freshman year to enter as part of the EAG in their sophomore year, if they have been enrolled no more than three quarters and have completed 30-59 graded credits at the University. EAG candidates must have completed courses in microeconomics, calculus, and college-level English composition. Admission is more competitive for this category than it is for UAG.

Writing Skills Assessment (WSA)

All applicants must take the WSA. In the assessment session, students are given 90 minutes to plan and write two essays. One essay is based on a short workplace scenario (called the Persuasion task) and one is based on an assertion (called the Position task).

Application Evaluation

Candidates are evaluated on their overall academic record, grades in courses required before application, written communication skills, and evidence of leadership skills and community activities. Consideration is also given to such factors as cultural experiences, significantly higher recent grades, exceptional extracurricular activities or work experience, and the effect of personal disadvantage on earlier education.

Application to Options

Business students may officially pursue two options, formalized programs of study. At the time of application to the School, an applicant may apply for one option. Admission to an option is based on space availability.

UW Students

If you are currently a student at UW-Seattle or if you have been admitted to UW-Seattle for the spring quarter, you need only complete and submit a UW Business School application. If you are a Returning Former Student, you must complete and file a Returning Former Student Re-Enrollment Application as well as a business application.

Transfer Students

You are a transfer applicant if you:

  • have never attended UW-Seattle or
  • have attended UW-Seattle only as a non-matriculated undergraduate, and
  • you have not been accepted to UW-Seattle for the spring.

Students who wish to attend the UW Business School must also apply to and be accepted by the University of Washington-Seattle (UW). Although you may apply to UW and the business program for the same year, your admission to the School is contingent upon your admission to UW. If your UW file has not been completed by the UW deadline (February 15 for autumn quarter), we cannot consider your Business School application.

You must meet the UW Business School's prerequisite course requirements to be considered for admission to business. If you have attended a community college in Washington State, refer to the Transfer Guide for equivalent courses. Business courses taken at other educational institutions can be evaluated for equivalency.

Courses taught at the freshman and sophomore levels at other colleges usually cannot be used to satisfy the School's upper-division business requirements for graduation.

The UW Business School honors the Associate Degree Agreement for those students who have an approved associate degree from a Washington community college.

Credit Restrictions and UW Residence Requirement

You are allowed a maximum of 90 transferable community college credit hours toward the 180 credits needed for the UW bachelor’s degree. Up to 90 credit hours of correspondence or other extension coursework may also apply to the bachelor’s degree. However, every student must complete 45 of the final 60 credit hours in residence at the UW.

To meet the upper-division requirement for a BABA, you must complete six of the nine upper-division core classes (including a capstone course), and 40 of the 53 required upper-division business credit hours at the University of Washington-Seattle. Students who have taken more than three of the nine core business courses at another institution are generally not admitted to the School. Contact a UW Business School adviser if you have questions.

Post-baccalaureate Students

A limited number of spaces in the UW Business School are available to students who have already completed an undergraduate degree and wish to pursue a second. Post-baccalaureate students must apply to the UW as well as to the UW Business School.

Admission to the UW Business School is based on your academic record for the last 90 credits of coursework, grades in specific required courses, written communication skills, and evidence of leadership skills and community activities. Due to the complexities of post-baccalaureate admissions, we suggest that you discuss the process with a business adviser or a University admissions counselor. Post-baccalaureate applicants should consider the School’s MBA Program.

Space is also limited for students who have undergraduate business degrees or MBAs and are interested in the accounting option. Students in this category who are accepted must complete Accounting 215 and 225 as well as a course in statistics and in calculus prior to Autumn Quarter.

International Students

When applying to the UW Business School, application requirements for international students are the same as for any other student. However, the requirements for applying to the University of Washington must be followed for international students applying as transfers.

For instance, the application closing date for international freshman, transfer and postbaccalaureates is January 15, for summer or autumn enrollment. This deadline applies to all international applicants, even those who are attending school in the U.S.

Notes on Selected Required Courses

English Composition: For application, one 3-5 credit course must be completed in Australia, Canada, Ireland, New Zealand, the United Kingdom, or the United States, or taken at an international school where English is the language of instruction.

Introduction to Law (Management 200): This course covers the American legal system; it is not a business law course. If you are not able to take a comparable course in the U.S., you may take it during your quarter of admission to the UW Business School.

Freshman Admissions Program (FRAP)

The Freshman Admission Program provides a unique opportunity for a small number of high school seniors to be offered direct admission into the UW Business School upon entering UW. Students are considered for FRAP if Business is indicated as the intended major on the UW Admissions Application. A committee determines acceptance into FRAP based on certain academic requirements.
