In preparation for anticipated reductions to the University Libraries information resources budget, we are undertaking a comprehensive review of our serial subscriptions (including print and electronic journals, databases, and microforms) in spring 2009.

A letter went out to all faculty, deans, directors and chairs describing the review process and the extent of the anticipated budget reduction. A copy of this letter and more information about the Review is available on the Libraries web site at:

From March through June 2009 the UW Libraries is conducting a pilot project to deliver journal articles from our print collection to your desktop at no charge for current UW students, faculty and staff.

For current UW students, faculty, and staff at the Bothell/Cascadia, Seattle, and Tacoma campuses the UW Libraries will provide electronic copies of articles, either from the UW Libraries collection or from another library, usually within one to two business days.

For more information see: http://www.lib.washington.edu/ILL/pilot.html

Dear Foster School Community:

One of our new year’s resolutions for 2009 is to respond to some of the suggestions we received from you for improved technology in last spring’s In-Library Use Survey. Here are some things that are new for winter quarter:

We’ve upgraded our computer equipment by replacing six of our old Libraries public workstations and adding four additional workstations. Most of these will require UWNetID authentication and have MS OFFICE available.

Our Bloomberg workstation will be replaced within the first few weeks of the quarter. This should result in a big improvement in performance.

To enhance group work we’ve also purchased seven large LCD screens for our group study rooms that students can use with their own laptops to display presentations, web pages, and other images. Four rooms on our mezzanine now have wall-mounted LCD screens available. We’ll have three more rooms outfitted with LCD screens within the first few weeks of the quarter.

We’re very grateful to the School’s Andersen Technology Endowment for funding these technology enhancements.

The University has suspended operations on all three campuses for Monday 12/22/08.  All University Libraries are closed.  For more information see the UW Alerts page and the University Libraries Home Page.

Beginning December 1st, the Summit Catalog is now part of the UW WorldCat search.

See the announcement about Summit changes for more information.

RGE Monitor is available to UW users on a trial basis until December 12, 2008. It’s one of several new services we’re considering this year and we’d value your input. To access the database, just go to:

www.rgemonitor.com

Founded in 2004 by Nouriel Roubini, a professor at NYU’s Stern School of Business, RGE Monitor provides current analytical content focused on economic, financial, geostrategic, and geopolitical topics written by Roubini and a team of experts. In addition to original content, references judged relevant and important by RGE editors are also provided, often with full text links.

I encourage to you take a look at the database before December 12 and send any comments you might have.

Summit is the shared catalog of the 36 Washington and Oregon libraries that make up the Orbis Cascade Alliance. Beginning later this month the Alliance will begin the migration of Summit to a new software vendor. This will result in a number of modifications to Summit and Summit borrowing.

For details about the changes and the reasons for making the change now see:

http://www.lib.washington.edu/services/summitchange.html

Dear Foster School Community:

I want to give you a brief update you on a change you’ve begun to see in the Foster Business Library.

We’re in the process of merging our periodical stacks and book stacks on the Balmer side of the library. This means that print periodicals will be arranged by call number instead of by title. You can get the call number for any journal held by the UW by looking it up in the Libraries Catalog. The Catalog also provides links to journals for which we have online access.
http://catalog.lib.washington.edu/

Why are we doing it now?

Over the years more and more of our journals have become available online and our print journal collection has become smaller, so this is something we would have eventually done anyway. The main reason we’re doing it now is that we need to clear the area currently occupied by our Periodicals stacks for our upcoming PACCAR Hall-related library renovation. In the renovated space, that area will be a new entrance and Circulation Desk. We
also want to take advantage of a concurrent collections project that allowed us to relocate 18,000 seldom used print volumes to the Libraries’ remote shelving facility at Sand Point.

Most of our collection shifts should be completed by the end of 2008. If you’re looking for something that you think should be here but can’t find, please contact one of the library staff and we’ll help track it down for you. You can also use the “Request” button on the Libraries Catalog to request that Foster Library staff pull a specific journal volume for you and hold it at the Circulation Desk.

Thanks in advance for your patience and understanding.

The Northwest Historical Annual Reports Collection is a growing digital collection of annual financial reports of companies currently or historically based in the Pacific Northwest. The collection includes annual reports dating from the 1930s and provides a continuous run of annual reports for most of the companies up to the 1990s.

The Collection currently includes reports from Boeing, Paccar and Weyerhaeuser and we are in the process of adding more.

With the flu and cold season approaching, it’s a good idea to clean your hands regularly. For your health and convenience, there is now a public Purell® dispenser available for Foster Business Library users near our Access Plus workstations. Purell® dispensers are also available in the other libraries on campus.
