UW Web Credit Card Project Overview

Areas at the University of Washington (UW) have identified the need for and interest in accepting credit card transactions using the World Wide Web (WWW). Several areas at the UW currently have applications or methodologies in place to accept Web-based credit card purchases. These areas have taken different approaches and technologies to implement these services. And, a variety of vendors have been selected for this credit card transaction processing.

Outside of the UW, other institutions have also implemented Web-based credit card technologies. Limited trends in these e-commerce implementations have been discovered through research with these institutes.

A central infrastructure and application to provide Web-based credit card processing for UW areas offers common benefits and efficiencies. These include:

  • Mainstream expertise in the technology avoiding the need to duplicate skills for each installation.
  • Contracting with one credit card service provider to provide volume-pricing efficiencies.
  • Providing a secure computing platform for credit card processing.
  • Providing a computing environment and application for UW areas that do not currently have a product and sales tracking application.
  • Establishing common methods for UW required functions including auditing procedures, data transfers to central systems, and other.

The UW Web Credit Card application was created to meet these identified needs and to take advantage of the common benefits and efficiencies at the University of Washington.

UW Web Credit Card Application Status

The UW Web Credit Card application was completed in September, 2001, and is available for use by UW areas. Web Conference Registration, Web Donation, and WebStore applications are also completed and available.

UW Web Credit Card Users

UW Web Credit Card and the related applications are in use by a number of UW departments. Departments using the UW Web Credit Card application directly (not via WebStore, Web Conference Registration, or Web Donate) include:

  • Center for Career Services
  • C&C Computer Training
  • MyUW.net (UW Alumni ISP)
  • UW Educational Outreach
  • UW Miscellaneous Fees
  • UW Office of Tuition
