The BREACH studies are CALFED Category III funded research projects located in the San Francisco Bay Estuary, California. BREACH I sampling was conducted from 1997 to 2000, with study sites in tidal freshwater wetlands of the Sacramento/San Joaquin Delta. BREACH II research started in 2000, moving into the estuarine wetlands of San Pablo Bay and Suisun Bay.
Our fundamental research goal is to analyze historically-breached levee wetlands as a means to predict the feasibility, patterns, and rates of restoration to natural ecological function. Such a study necessitates an interdisciplinary approach, involving measurements of hydrological, geomorphological, biogeochemical and ecological indicators.
