Whether you are a creative writer who wants to learn more about how to get published, or someone who wants to work on a magazine staff or in a publishing house, this is a great opportunity to learn more about the various ways to build a career around your writing and editing skills. Get expert advice from a diverse panel of writers, editors, and publishers.

Garth Stein

Garth Stein is the author of the New York Times best selling literary novel, The Art of Racing in the Rain (Harper, 2008). Now published in 23 languages, The Art of Racing in the Rain was the #1 BookSense selection for June, 2008, the Starbucks spring/summer 2008 book selection, and has been on the IndieBound bestseller list since its publication. Stein's previous novel, How Evan Broke His Head and Other Secrets (Soho Press, 2005) won a Pacific Northwest Booksellers Association Award, and was a BookSense Pick in both hardcover and paperback. Raven Stole the Moon (Pocket, 1998) was Stein's first novel. He has also written a full-length play, Brother Jones, and produced a number of award-winning documentaries.
Ingrid Emerick

Emerick is a freelance editor and co-founder of the recently launched Girl Friday Productions, a book development company. She has been in book publishing for over 15 years, including 12 years at Seal Press. Her range of experience includes the roles of associate publisher and editorial director. She is the co-editor of Gifts of the Wild: A Woman's Book of Adventure, A Woman Alone: Travel Tales from Around the Globe, and Go Your Own Way: Women Travel the World Solo, all published by Seal Press. Her own writing has appeared in A Woman Alone and on HipMama.com. She also leads writing workshops; the next one is entitled, "New Zealand's South Island with Adventure Divas." Emerick lives with her husband and two children in Seattle.
Rachel Hart

As editorial director in Tiger Oak's Seattle office, and editor of award-winning Seattle magazine, Rachel oversees the editorial operations of Seattle, Seattle Bride, Oregon Bride, Northwest Home, Seattle Business Monthly, Northwest Meetings + Events, and Tiger Oak custom publications. Rachel's love of trends, arts, urban living and pop culture helps her capture the zeitgeist of Seattle in the pages of Tiger Oak's magazines. With 17 years of experience in city magazines, Rachel feels magazines should tell the story of what's happening in a city right now. Her team has recruited some of the city's top luminaries and writers to pen stories for Seattle's premiere journals of news, culture, and lifestyle. She holds a Bachelor of Science in journalism from the University of Wisconsin at Madison. She lives in Seattle with her husband and two young sons.
Rebecca Hoogs, '01, '04

Rebecca Hoogs is the author of a chapbook, Grenade (2005) and her poems have appeared or are forthcoming in Poetry, AGNI, Crazyhorse, Zyzzyva, The Journal, Poetry Northwest, POOL, The Florida Review, and others. She is the recipient of fellowships from the MacDowell Colony (2004), Artist Trust of Washington State (2005), and Jack Straw Productions (2008). In 2007, she presented commissioned work at the Seattle Poetry Festival and The Roethke Readings, a presentation of ACT Theatre and Eleventh Hour Productions. Before joining Seattle Arts & Lectures in June 2004, she taught English at the University of Washington, where she received her M.F.A. in Poetry and an M.A. in English.
Sarah McCormic

Sarah McCormic has worked as a website editor for WebMD, Outside magazine, Microsoft Encarta, EcoHaus, and the University of Washington. Her freelance writing has appeared in Seattle Weekly, Seattle Post-Intelligencer, and in many online publications. Her personal essays are published in three anthologies, BITCHfest: Ten Years of Cultural Criticism from the Pages of Bitch Magazine (Farrar, Straus and Giroux, August 2006), Homelands: Women's Journeys Across Race, Place, and Time (Seal Press, January 2007), and Greece: A Love Story - Women Write about the Greek Experience (Seal Press, March 2007).
