Ever thought about teaching at the community college level or wonder how working at a community college might be different than working at other types of educational institutions? Come listen to community college professors and administrators describe their positions - work environment, responsibilities, students, and more. They'll also provide tips on how you can make yourself marketable for community college jobs.

Spanish Language Instructor, South Seattle Community College - Web link...
Asha Esterberg has several years of professional experience teaching Spanish language courses at community colleges and universities and is currently teaching at South Seattle Community College. She also worked and studied abroad extensively. As the on-site coordinator for Earlham College's Spanish Language Program based in Mexico, she was charged with managing a team of faculty and staff, overseeing the program's budget and negotiating contracts for students' internships. Asha has also led delegations (of students, healthcare professionals, and educators) to Nicaragua to participate in a wide range of community service projects; coordination and interpretation have been her primary responsibilities for these trips. In conjunction with these community projects, Asha also regularly provides cross-cultural training workshops for delegates participating in programs.

Dutch Henry earned his M.A. and Ph.D. in English at the UW. His specialty areas were critical theory and 19th century British literature. After completing his Ph.D., he taught English part-time at UW, UW Extension, North Seattle Community College, and Shoreline Community College. He was hired full-time at Shoreline in 1997. He teaches composition, literature, and interdisciplinary studies. Additionally, he has served as department chair for two separate two-year terms.

Jenny McFarland earned her B.S. in Aeronautics and Astronautics Engineering from MIT, and then worked in engineering for a few years. She enrolled in UW's Physiology & Biophysics graduate program, where she conducted her PhD research in neurophysiology, working with rhesus monkeys on control of eye movement and vestibular-ocular control. Dr. McFarland then completed a postdoc at MIT in Brain and Cognitive Science working on control of movement. She had a transformative community college teaching experience at Roxbury Community College in Boston (while at MIT) and now teaches science at Edmonds Community College.

Laura Manning earned her MA from the UW Speech Communication Department in 1993. She left the UW in Dec 1999 after spending many years as a doctoral candidate in the Speech Communication Department, working as a TA and then as an RA in the Center for Instructional Development and Research. She started teaching part-time at Highline Community College in Jan 2000; got a one-year contract in 2001; and started as a tenure-track instructor there in 2002. She specializes in teaching intercultural communication as well as Highline's basic communication class.
