Careers in Nursing

Panelists representing a broad spectrum of the nursing profession will talk about the multiple aspects of their jobs. This is your chance to hear from nurses themselves, about the many and varied responsibilities and challenges associated with this profession.

Panelists:

Christopher Imes
PhD. Student, UW School of Nursing
Christopher Imes is a second year PhD candidate in the UW School of Nursing. He received his BSN in 2000 and served as a US Army Officer in Hawaii for seven years, specializing in critical care nursing. While there he found his passion in teaching nurses and physicians. Chris would like to positively influence nursing students and to add to the current body of nursing knowledge.
Dr. Frances Marcus Lewis
Professor, Department of Family and Child Nursing, UW School of Nursing
Dr. Frances Marcus Lewis is an endowed professor in the Department of Family and Child Nursing at the UW School of Nursing. She is a noted evaluation methodologist and an expert in health behavior theory. Her main research activities focus on the processes by which life threatening chronic illness impacts the family, including school age and adolescent children.She is currently engaged as a technical consultant in the Ukraine for the training of physicians and nurses and the provision of behavioral interventions for women with breast cancer
Florence Palmer, '05
Registered Nurse, Critical Care, UW Medical Center
Florence works in the Cardiothoracic Intensive Care Unit. She currently is in the Adult/Older Adult NP track. This is her second year. After graduating, she plans to work for a couple of years in her field before returning home to Kenya to set up a clinic.
Kirsten Garner, '00
Midwife
After living in Tennessee for 3 years, Kirsten returned to Seattle to be closer to her family. She joined a midwifery group in the fall of 2005 and has loved every minute. She feels honored to practice as a midwife and attend women and families throughout their pregnancy, delivery and postpartum experiences.
Melissa Hines, '00
Registered Nurse, Emergency Room, Seattle Children's Hospital
Melissa graduated from the University of Washington School of Nursing in 2000. Her nursing experience includes pediatric oncology and ambulatory infusion, as well as clinical educator for outpatient oncology clinic. She is currently working in the Emergency Department at Seattle Children's Hospital.
