2009 UW Career Discovery Week
Career Discovery Week Blog

What’s up with CDW you ask?

March 24th, 2010 by Mark, CDW Webmaster

You may have stumbled across the UW Career Discovery Week site looking to see what’s happening this year or to remember those good old days of career panels across campus. We have some good news and bad news. First the bad: Career Discovery Week is no longer happening in its old form. Time and, importantly, costs involved in producing such an event was pretty large as you can imagine.

But good news! Much of what was offered during past year’s will continue in different forms throughout the year. Here’s the details:

2009 marked the tenth and final year of a centrally-produced Career Discovery Week presented annually during January and February on all three UW campuses. Led by the UW Alumni Association and the UW Career Center, it encompassed more than 150 events, more than 500 UW alumni and friend volunteers sharing their career experiences, and more than 400 employer recruiters staffing career fairs and employer panels.

Rather than a centrally-produced event, in 2010 many of the events previously part of CDW will continue to be offered throughout the year by the same departments, programs and other UW groups who previously participated in CDW.

UW Bothell and UW Tacoma are planning to offer selected events that were previously part of their Career Discovery Week line-ups. Check out upcoming UW Bothell career events or what’s happening at UW Tacoma.

At the Seattle campus, the UW Career Center has continuous programming throughout the year, with detail available on the Career Center’s calendar. The UW Alumni Association offers a variety of career and networking opportunities for students—see the UWAA’s career site for upcoming events as well as Web-based career tools such as Husky Career Network and LinkedIn.

If you have any further questions, please contact Career Discovery Week’s organizers—the UW Alumni Association or the UW Career Center. And if you’d like to relive all the excitement of past CDWs, check out the archived pages.

But wait, there’s more!

January 30th, 2009 by Mark, CDW Webmaster

It’s Friday and as I write there’s not one, not two, but seven different events going on at UW Seattle. A little later this afternoon check out Careers in Writing, Publishing, and Editing — maybe you can learn how to become a professional blogger (I wish we had one of those folks around here!).

Don’t fret if you haven’t figured out exactly how you’re going to become the happiest person on Earth (career-wise) just yet. There’s 14 post-week events taking place at UW Seattle. Among there’s two sessions on creating that perfect resume, one on green-collar jobs and the popular Public Service and Non-Profit Opportunities Fair.

Hope you enjoyed this week! If you have any thoughts, suggestions, bribes raves or complaints, we’d love to hear. Write to careerwk@u.washington.edu.

What a week! Career Discovery Week has had some great sessions and great audiences. I am so glad all of you Huskies are attending. Didn’t I tell you there would be something for everyone?! What a great opportunity to network with grad students, Alumni, and professionals all interested in the same topics as you. Each one is fun, informative and you will feel great about school and the road ahead. This is the best way to get you excited about your career. So if you have not attended Career Discovery Week by now, this is your chance! What are you waiting for?

Good luck on Midterms everyone!

It’s Wednesday already?

January 28th, 2009 by Ashley W.

Can you guys believe it’s already the middle of Career Discovery Week? I’m sure happy to see Wednesday, especially in these long, dreary days of winter. But, don’t let that mid-week slump keep you from checking out the great sessions going on today! CDW still has plenty to offer everyone- from you Freshmen and Sophmores out there trying to understand exactly when you should be looking for internships to Seniors trying to decide between Graduate school and entering the business world.

There are also some great sessions today for specific majors, in CommunicationPolitical Science and Sociology for those of you who really have no idea what to tell your parents when they ask “So, what are you going to do with that major?” (Yeah….I remember those days). For you science types, we’ve got sessions for Environmental Health, Biology, and Engineering. Regardless of what you’re interested in, there’s a session for you today!

Don’t forget to check out the CDW Guide for events coming up in the next few days! Believe me, you won’t be disappointed!

Updates and The Daily checks out the Week

January 27th, 2009 by Mark, CDW Webmaster

Great coverage of Career Discovery Week in The Daily on Tuesday. Check out the lead articles on CDW for underclassmen and how graduating students are approaching it.

A couple notes about event cancellations. With over 150 events and hundreds of panelists, there’s always a chance that we’ll have a cancellation or two. These events aren’t happening:
- Discover Retail: Networking Reception (was Wednesday, 6-8 p.m., UW Seattle)
- Environmental Careers: Laws and Policy (was Thursday, 3:30-5 p.m., UW Seattle)

Don’t fret — there’s plenty more to choose from!

Tuesday Agenda

January 27th, 2009 by Mark, CDW Webmaster

It’s a cool morning, but it’s supposed to warm up a bit in the afternoon for our bursting-at-the-seams CDW schedule.

UW Tacoma has four events today including the intriguingly titled The State of Technology: Where Are You Going? Over at Bothell, there’s plenty going on with eight different events. Polish that resume with Resumes the UW Way or hear from Arts & Sciences alumni.

At Seattle, it’s our biggest day with a whopping 27 ways to discover your future. Amongst the many options there’s a nice double feature at Gould Hall. From 2-3 p.m., check out International Experience as Career Exploration. Then stick around for the Study Abroad Fair from 3-4 p.m. If you’re an undergrad still wondering what to study (let alone what career you want!), check out Is There a Right Major For Me?

Later in the day, learn about some pretty varied fields with Careers in Sports, Careers in Biotechnology or Careers in Built Environments.

And these are just the tip of the iceberg–check out everything going down today.

Health Sciences: The Good, The Bad, and The Ugly

January 26th, 2009 by Ashley W.

If you’ve ever wandered the halls of the Health Sciences Building and wondered just where that hallway leads, you’re not alone. Working down here in the HSB, where people get lost just reading the signs, I know that getting into medical fields can be incredibly challenging. You have to be persistent, diligent and incredibly smart just to complete the application process! If health care is your passion, however, CDW has some great sessions to help you work on fueling your dreams.

If you are considering a field in the health sciences, check out the workshops on Nursing on Tuesday, Careers in Medicine and International Health on Wednesday, and Health Care Management on Thursday. Great information from people actually working in those fields will help you figure out if your hands belong in the operating room, wielding a scalpel or in Africa providing health care counseling to native families.

They won’t give you secrets to getting around the creepy basement tunnels of the health sciences building, but they will help you figure out if that career as a brain surgeon is right for you! Stop by and see what these workshops have to offer.

And hey, you don’t even have to come down to the HSB to attend these sessions! All the more reason to grab your notepad and check it out!

And we’re off!

January 26th, 2009 by Brooke A., UWAA student intern

Career Discovery Week is here! That means stop reading this blog, get up, and go to those sessions! There are 150 free sessions, just for us. I hope everyone takes advantage of this great opportunity, and pronto! Don’t forget today you can get a free coffee if you print out you’re MyCDW schedule and bring it to one of the coffee places on campus. Don’t let the cold weather keep you indoors, enjoy CDW this week and challenge yourself to attend at least two sessions.

Free coffee on Monday for MyCDW users!

January 25th, 2009 by Mark, CDW Webmaster

I don’t know about you, but I need coffee on Mondays. And with a busy week ahead, there’s nothing better than a free java.

On Monday, Jan. 26, students, faculty and staff who plan on attending Career Discovery Week events at UW Seattle can receive a free short drip coffee from one of eleven Campus Cafes just by showing their printed MyCDW event schedule!

It’s easy–just save some events to MyCDW, then go to the My Saved Events page and print. Present at any of the 11 participating locations for a free cup.

Thanks to UW Housing and Food Services for partnering on this giveaway (and for keeping me caffeinated)!

Grad School Track

January 23rd, 2009 by Courtney A., UWAA

I was excited to see the different tracks on the CDW site. I thought the grad school track would just be for people IN graduate school, but it seems to be completely relevant for master’s degree holders too.  The two sessions that are most compelling to me are ”Non-Faculty Positions in Universities for People with Graduate Degrees” and “Community College Teaching Opportunities.”  Looks like excellent speakers/panelists too.  Looking forward to it!
