Welcome to Community Access Washington State

The purpose of Community Access Washington State (CAWS) is to develop and test a set of observational and routinely collected measures that form an accessibility profile of a community or neighborhood. In other words, how physically and socially accessible are a community's public transportation, schools, retail shopping, public buildings, churches, community organizations, etc.? This profile can be used by individuals to find accessible resources in their community. The profile will also help guide local public health departments, independent living centers, and other groups in deciding where to intervene to have the greatest impact on the accessibility of a community.

In using this site, from the home page click on the city map (or name on the left) that you would like to view, Seattle or Spokane. Within each city you will find individual neighborhoods listed on the left. Click the neighborhood you would like to view. For each neighborhood there are 15 accessibility areas listed, also on the left (for example, housing, transportation, healthcare, etc.). Again, click on the area you would like to view.

In addition, at the main menu there are also information guides for the areas of housing, transportation, healthcare, schools, and grocery stores. These guides provide ideas for how to find other information you may need which isn't listed on the site. For example, the healthcare guide includes a list of questions you may want to ask when looking for a doctor. Again, click on the guide you are interested in viewing.

You will also find related links, a more extensive project overview, and a feature for searching the site at the main menu.
