17. How Words Bound up a ThiefThe belovèd fiery chestnut belonging to Shireet, a monk at the White Well Temple, suddenly disappeared. Shireet was really angry, he said, "I'll catch and bind that thief who's bound and taken my horse, just watch me!" People believed what Shireet said and it passed like wildfire from mouth to mouth through the area. Many people were guessing at what the words might mean. Some of them thought he had already been caught, they claimed he'd been frightened by what the monk had said and had returned his horse. But then a man appeared in the marketplace, with white marks from having been bound. This was really the thief, and the story goes that Shireet had not learnt how to bind with ropes, rather he had bound the man with words. »
