Research Training in
Occupational and Environmental Health

Call For Applications

The Collaborative Center for Healthy Work and Environment is recruiting candidates for a one-year training program in Occupational and Environmental Health research methods. The Center is administered by the University of Washington, in the United States, and is guided by advisors and collaborators at major institutions in Southeast Asia.

This training is open to qualified researchers, professionals or clinicians who want to do research on important occupational and environmental health problems in Southeast Asia. Up to ten candidates will be selected each year from Laos, Cambodia, Thailand, and Vietnam. Candidates must describe an idea for a research project in their application. During the training year, each trainee will develop their idea into a formal research proposal. At the end of the training year, the best proposals will receive awards from $5,000 to $20,000 (US) to conduct the proposed project.

The training includes three sessions during one year. Each session lasts about one week. The session locations rotate between cities in Vietnam, Thailand, Cambodia, and Lao PDR. Training is conducted in English by faculty from the United States, Canada, and Southeast Asia. Each trainee is assigned at least one mentor from the United States or Canada, plus one mentor from Southeast Asia. Trainees receive travel and per diem support for training sessions.

Requirements:

  • Candidates must be a citizen of Laos, Cambodia, Thailand or Vietnam.
  • Candidates must be able to read and express themselves in written and spoken English. Perfect English fluency is not required.
  • Candidates must have a bachelor degree or higher education.
  • Candidates must have a research idea related to occupational and/or environmental health.
  • Previous courses on epidemiology, statistics, or research design are desirable but not required.

Priorities

We will consider any reasonable application. However, applications will receive highest priority if:

  • The research idea involves a high-priority subject area selected for the 2008-2009 training year:
    1) health risks related to water quality or sanitation;
    2) health risks related to outdoor or indoor air pollution; or
    3) occupational respiratory disease.
  • The research would involve an epidemiology study design, evaluation of an intervention, or evaluation of clinical outcomes. This program is not appropriate for laboratory research.
  • The research could be completed in less than one or two years.
  • The research is likely to produce a solution or other usable information for an important problem.
