The main current activities at IRET are a case-control study addressing a potential association of childhood leukemia with prenatal parental pesticide exposure; epidemiologic studies on cancer among banana workers and DBCP exposed workers, suicides among banana workers, and different methods for pesticide exposure assessment.

The Tech has a major focus on Industrial Hygiene and Industrial Engineering. Responsible for the majority of the training in Industrial Hygiene that presently occurs in Costa Rica, the Tech faculty are frequently involved in hands on problem solving of real world health and safety problems in Costa Rican industry.

The UNAN, the oldest institution of higher learning in Nicaragua has a very active Preventive Medicine program within the School of Medicine. A large focus within the Program is occupational health. Faculty include specialists in Occupational Medicine, Industrial Hygiene and Epidemiology. Active research areas include injury research, pesticide health effects and occupational hazard mapping among others.
