TEN PRACTICUM
PARTNERSHIP PROGRAMS SELECTED National
University-Community Partnership Initiative Aims to Recruit Social Workers to
Field of Aging After
a highly competitive selection process and rigorous peer-review, The New York
Academy of Medicine's Practicum Partnership Program has announced its first
ten grantees, listed below. The
funded schools of social work will use university-community partnerships to
promote enhanced field rotations, coupled with competency-based curricula and
improvements to field instructor roles, to recruit social work students into
the field of aging. Funding for the
national initiative is provided by the John A. Hartford Foundation. The
next Request for Proposals will be announced on the PPP's website, www.socialworkleadership.org on December 1, 2005,
with applications due on January 15, 2006. §

AWARDED TO SUPPORT MEDICAL STUDENT COMMUNITY SERVICE The
"Caring for Community" grant program provides funding for service
projects that are initiated, developed, and administered by medical students
in collaboration with existing community agencies or other medical school
outreach activities. The program is
administered by the Association of American Medical Colleges, with funding
from the Pfizer Medical Humanities Initiative. The
2005 grantees are: 1) Baylor College of Medicine; 2) Columbia University
College of Physicians and Surgeons; 3) Louisiana State University School of
Medicine in New Orleans; 4) University at Buffalo, State University of New
York School of Medicine and Biological Sciences; 5) University of
Massachusetts Medical School; 6) University of Medicine and Dentistry of New
Jersey-Robert Wood Johnson Medical School; 7) University of Pittsburgh School
of Medicine; and 8) University of Rochester School of Medicine and Dentistry.
The
grants awarded to this year's recipients will provide funding to six free
medical clinics for the homeless or uninsured, and for two health education
and promotion programs. Grant amounts range from $12,000-30,000 over

Final Report to Commerce Secretary Carlos M. Gutierrez The
report details the Committee's recommended actions for improving the way the
Federal government administers community and economic development programs.
In his Fiscal Year 2006 budget, President Bush proposed the reforming and
restructuring of 18 existing Federal development programs. The new $3.71 billion unified grant-making
program will better target assistance and achieve greater results for
low-income individuals and families, and economically-distressed areas. Details Senate Appropriations
Committee Restores Funding for Majority of Title VII Health Professions
Program On
July 14 the Senate Appropriations Committee voted to restore funding for the
majority of Title VII health professions programs and to give the National
Institutes of Health (NIH) a $1 billion increase over the current year's
level. The committee voted to report its version of the FY 2006
Labor-HHS-Education Appropriations bill (H. R. 3010, S. Rept. 109-103). The
Labor-HHS-Education Appropriations Subcommittee marked up the bill July 12.
The House passed its version of the bill on June 24. Read the

Approves Higher Education Act Reauthorization Bill The
House Education and the Workforce 21st Century Competitiveness Subcommittee
July 14 approved, as amended, H.R. 609, the "College Access and
Opportunity Act of 2005," which would reauthorize the Higher Education
Act (HEA), by a party line vote of 18-15.
The full Education and the Workforce Committee is expected to mark-up
the bill during the week of July 18. Read the

Institutions - Deadline: August 4 - The Centers for Disease Control
and Prevention (CDC) has an estimated $900,000 in fiscal year 2005
funding to help organizations support professional development, education,
research and training for racial and ethnic minorities in the health
professions. Among other goals, the program will help organizations
strengthen the educational and professional development of minority health
professionals and educators. The agency expects to award three grants of
about $300,000 each to minority health professions schools and nonprofit
organizations representing historically black colleges and universities,

That Improve Child Well-Being by Fostering Healthy Marriages within

Johnson & Johnson (J&J)/Society for the Arts in Healthcare
Partnership to Promote Arts and Healing Grant. This grant program seeks to
promote the use of the arts to enhance the healthcare experience for
patients, their families, and caregivers. Proposals are being sought from
healthcare organizations and/or arts agencies working in partnership to
produce innovative projects to serve patients, their families, and caregivers

Available to Recruit Baby Boomer Volunteers - Deadline: August 22 - The Corporation for
National and Community Service has announced the availability of
approximately $4 million in Challenge Grants for a small number of nonprofit

Substance Abuse Policy Research Program – Round X – Deadline: August 23 - The
Robert Wood Johnson Foundation’s program is designed to encourage experts in
public health, law, political science, medicine, sociology, criminal justice,
economics, psychology and other behavioral and policy sciences to address
issues related to substance abuse. Additional

program will provide grants to support the participation of state and local
public health agencies in health information exchanges. The program will make
funds available to public health agencies for activities in support of

Foundation 2005 Grants - Deadline:
Sept 15 - The Charles Frueauff Foundation
focuses on at-risk youths in all its funding categories: education, health,
and social services. Tutoring, sexual-health and job-training initiatives
receive preference. Call for Proposals- HRSA Rural Health Care Services Outreach
Grant Program - Deadline: Sept 16 - Program encourages the
development of new and innovative health care delivery systems in rural
communities that lack essential health care services. The emphasis of the
grant program is on service delivery through creative strategies requiring
the grantee to form a consortium with at least two additional
partners. For example, through consortia of schools, churches,
emergency medical service providers, local universities, private practitioners
and the like, rural communities can create hospice care, bring health
check-ups to children, and provide prenatal care to women in remote areas.

An important role of the Fogarty International Research Collaboration (FIC)is
to foster discovery and reduce global health disparities through the support
of international cooperation across the continuum of basic, clinical and
applied biomedical, and health sciences. Additional

health networks. Grant funds are used to support activities that strengthen

People 2010 Vision Objectives - Deadline: August 31 - The National Eye Institute
announces the 2006 Healthy Vision Community Awards Program, providing funding
for the implementation of health education activities that support the
Healthy Vision 2010 objectives and the Healthy People 2010 goals to reduce
health disparities and improve quality of life. The focus of the 2006
awards is on diabetic retinopathy, glaucoma, occupational eye injury,

accomplishments of colleges that are helping less-advantaged youth and adults

details. Call for Applications-Ethics of Prevention and Public Health
Fellowship - Deadline: Sept 1 - In July 2002, the Cancer
Prevention Fellowship Program established specialty training in the ethics of
prevention and public health. The CPFP has for years provided a
multidisciplinary training environment for postdoctoral biomedical and social
scientists, clinicians, and public health professionals. Training in the
ethics of prevention and public health represents a new initiative within
this well-established and highly regarded program. In addition to its unique
features, the structure of this training is identical to that of the parent
program, including eligibility, stipends, benefits, application procedures,

to build the nation's capacity for research, leadership and action to address
the broad range of factors that affect health. The program is founded on the
