CCPh principles of good community-campus partnerships revised

In October 2006, the CCPH Board of Directors approved a revised version of the CCPH principles of good
community-campus partnerships it first adopted in October 1998. The revision is intended to reflect an increased
understanding of partnerships from published research and the lived experiences of community and academic partners.
To view both versions, go to http://depts.washington.edu/ccph/principles.html#principles

Gateways: International Journal of

Community Research and Engagement

A new journal is being published by the UTS Shopfront at the University of Technology, Sydney and the Centre for Urban Research and Learning at Loyola University in Chicago.  Please see below for an excerpt from the journal website.  The new journal will also be publishing selected peer-reviewed papers based on presentations from CCPH's 10th anniversary conference, April 11-14, 2007 in Toronto (for details on the conference, visit http://depts.washington.edu/ccph/conf-overview.html)

Gateways: International Journal of Community Research and Engagement is concerned with the practice and processes of community engagement: with ideas as to what constitutes engagement between universities and communities, with the theories and policies which enable community engagement and with the possibilities for sustainable collaborations and outcomes. The journal provides a forum for scholars, community partners and policymakers to discuss experiences and aspirations for collaborations between universities and communities.

Gateways provides a forum for academics, practitioners and community representatives to pursue issues and reflect on practices related to interactions between tertiary institutions and community organisations; academic interventions in community; community-based projects with links to the tertiary sector and community initiatives. The journal publishes evaluative case studies of community engagement initiatives, analyses of the policy environment and theoretical reflections that contribute to the scholarship of engagement.

Contributions will be either fully peer-reviewed articles or non peer-reviewed. Authors will be asked to nominate their category of contribution. Issues canvassed will include but not be confined to: universities and community engagement; partnerships involving university and/or community and/or non-government organisations and/or government; research and curriculum development; engaged teaching and learning; community engagement theory.

MESSAGE FROM OUR EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR

Sarena Seifer

This year is Community-Campus Partnerships for Health’s 10th anniversary!

A number of exciting plans are underway to celebrate this milestone, reflect on our accomplishments and engage stakeholders in determining our future directions:

Our 10th anniversary conference, “Mobilizing Partnerships for Social Change,” aims to nurture a growing network of community-campus partnerships that are striving to achieve the systems and policy changes needed to address the root causes of health, social and economic inequalities.  The conference includes the usual features that our

members expect and value: inspiring keynote presentations, skill-building workshops, innovative community site visits and valuable networking.  This year’s conference also includes unprecedented opportunities for CCPH members to engage in deliberative dialogue, form ongoing collaborations and mobilize around shared goals.   Holding the conference in Toronto signals the growth of our membership in Canada and our desire to link with and learn from colleagues across the globe.  And we’ve got one heck of an anniversary party planned! Whether you are new to CCPH, a long-time member or a past supporter seeking to reconnect, I hope you will join us in April!

Interviews are underway with founding board members and others who played instrumental roles in the organization over the years.  We’ll also soon be issuing a “call for stories of impact” that will gather stories of ways that CCPH members have transformed communities and higher education through partnerships, how their involvement in CCPH has impacted them and their work, and their hopes for the future.  Excerpts will be incorporated into a 10th anniversary publication to be released at the conference and audio files to be posted on our website.

During this 10th anniversary year, each issue of Partnership Matters will highlight a landmark event, signature program or key individual in CCPH’s history.  In this issue, we reprint the first public communication about CCPH, below.  What strikes me most is that the mission and needs we were founded to address are still compelling.  As we celebrate our collective accomplishments and progress made over the past decade, we also must ask: What is our vision for the next ten years?  What are the leverage points for change?  What strategic issues should be our focus?  We look to you for your guidance as we move forward.  Please send your comments and suggestions to me at sarena@u.washington.edu or 206-616-4305 (and be sure to respond to the forthcoming “call for stories of impact”).

What ties us together is our commitment to social justice and our passion for the power of partnerships to transform communities and higher education.   Thank you for sharing that commitment and passion, and for making CCPH the dynamic, effective organization it is today.

August 21, 1996

Dear Friend and Colleague,

I am writing to introduce you to an emerging national organization, Community-Campus Partnerships for Health, and to invite your questions, reactions, ideas and involvement.  Perhaps the best way to begin is to tell you the story of our brief history to date.

Community-Campus Partnerships for Health is an outgrowth of Health Professions Schools in Service to the Nation (HPSISN), a national initiative designed to strengthen partnerships between health professions schools and their communities.  A program of the Pew Health Professions Commission and the National Fund for Medical Education, HPSISN receives support from The Pew Charitable Trusts, the Corporation for National Service and the Health Resources and Services Administration and is housed at the Center for the Health Professions at the University of California-San Francisco.   The program’s components include making grants to support service-learning in health professions schools and sponsoring national training institutes and conferences.

In March 1996, HPSISN sponsored its first national conference on community partnerships in health professions education on the campus of Northeastern University in Boston.  Nearly 500 people, including health professions faculty, students and staff of community-based organizations, attended this landmark event.  Participants voiced strong support for the formation of a national organization to support and sustain partnerships between communities and health professions schools to improve health.   As a result, Community-Campus Partnerships for Health was launched.

A diverse group of individuals, whose names appear on this letterhead, volunteered to begin the strategic planning necessary to develop a viable organization.  During its first meeting on August 5-6, the planning committee examined the needs CCPH was organizing to address.  Prominent among these needs were the following:

§         the need to prepare health care practitioners as community-responsive providers and as agents of social change

§         the need to make health care education more responsive and relevant to community needs

§         the need to recognize community contributions to teaching, research, and the development of knowledge

§         the need to “level the playing field” between communities and educational institutions

§         the need to promote educational institutions, faculty, and students as community building assets

§         the need to consider community assets as well as needs

The committee also reached consensus on a draft mission statement:

“To foster partnerships between communities and educational institutions that build on their strengths, balance their power, and develop their roles as change agents for improved community health and civic responsibility”

The committee recommended that CCPH incorporate as a 501(c)3 not-for-profit organization, with a board reflective of our diverse constituencies – communities, educational institutions, faculty, students, community-based organizations and community members.   While specific CCPH services were not a focus of their first meeting, the committee did discuss national and regional conferences, training institutes, on-site technical assistance, an information clearinghouse, a peer-reviewed journal and other possible programs and activities.

Community-Campus Partnerships for Health has a focus and characteristics that are distinct from existing and emerging organizations:

§         CCPH seeks to work collaboratively across sectors of higher education, communities and disciplinary boundaries to achieve successful community-campus partnerships nationwide

§         CCPH identifies students, university staff and faculty, and community members as equal constituencies

§         CCPH serves as a welcoming bridge between the many government and foundation-sponsored initiatives in community-oriented health professions education

We are particularly interested in your reaction to the draft mission statement, your suggestions of priority activities and future directions, and your thoughts on ways you hope to become involved in this exciting new organization.   It would be helpful to hear from you prior to our next strategic planning meeting, which will take place October 4-5 and will focus on refining CCPH’s organizational vision, goals, strategies and priority activities.  To do so, please contact me by phone: 206/616-4305; fax: 206/616-3175; or email: sarena@u.washington.edu.

Also, please mark your calendars now for the next national conference on community partnerships in health professions education, which will be held April 26-29, 1997 in San Francisco. The conference theme -- sustainability of community-campus partnerships -- should be relevant to both beginning and long-established partnerships.  As the “kick-off” event for CCPH, the conference will be a wonderful opportunity to learn more about the organization and to contribute to our agenda for the future.

I look forward to hearing from you soon.

Sincerely,

Sarena D. Seifer

Director, Health Professions Schools in Service to the Nation

Community-Based Research and Higher Education: Principles and Practices

Community-Based Research and Higher Education is a guide to how to incorporate a powerful and promising new form of scholarship into academic settings. The book presents a model of community-based research (CBR) that engages community members with students and faculty in the course of their academic work. Unlike traditional academic research, CBR is collaborative and change-oriented and finds its research questions in the needs of communities. This dynamic research model combines classroom learning with social action in ways that can ultimately empower community groups to address their own agendas and shape their own futures. At the same time it emphasizes the development of knowledge and skills that truly prepare students for active civic engagement.

Dimensions of Inequality in Canada

Is Canada becoming a more polarized society? Or is it a kind-hearted nation that takes care of its disadvantaged? This volume closely examines these differing views through a careful analysis of the causes, trends, and dimensions of inequality to provide an overall assessment of the state of inequality in Canada. Contributors include economists, sociologists, philosophers, and political scientists, and the discussion ranges from frameworks for thinking about inequality, to original analyses using Canadian data, to assessments of significant policy issues, methodologies, and research directions. What emerges is the most detailed picture of inequality in Canada to date and, disturbingly, one that shows signs of us becoming a less just society.
