Scholarship in Action: Applied Research and Community Change

CCPH members involved as editor and authors of new publication

Scholarship in Action: Applied Research and Community Change is a new publication of the US Department of Housing and Urban Development's Office of University Partnerships and available as a PDF document at www.oup.org.

Edited by CCPH member Linda Silka of the University of Massachusetts Lowell, the monograph highlights the benefits derived from engaged, community-based research; showcases emerging applied research; and identifies the challenges associated with applied research.  The unifying theme throughout this collection is how much communities and universities can achieve by working together in research partnerships.   In her introduction, Linda writes:

"Research that takes place outside the laboratory is becoming an increasingly important force in addressing and helping communities solve local problems. Academic researchers use different terms to describe this kind of inquiry, including applied research, engaged research, community-based research, and applied research partnerships. Despite the variety of labels, however, all of this research has a common focus on the application of academic knowledge to specific community-based issues.

Through applied research initiatives, communities and institutions of higher education often work together to identify the problem to be studied, investigate that problem through data collection, analyze and interpret the collected information, and decide how to implement an intervention based on the findings. Individual studies may include some or all of these steps of shared research and action.

Common sense might dictate that research, whenever possible, be approached in an engaged fashion. This is not always the case. Institutional and cultural barriers to applied research must be overcome before community-
higher education research partnerships can achieve their full potential as they seek to bring rigorous research to bear on the most pressing challenges facing communities. Fortunately many groups are now promoting applied research and helping researchers break down the barriers to its implementation. The U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Developments (HUDs) Office of University Partnerships (OUP) has been a leader in this regard, as have the National Institute of Environment Health Sciences, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, and Community-Campus Partnerships for Health. In Europe the academic Science Shops movement has also demonstrated the value of engaged research.

The intent of this volume is to showcase emerging applied research and to call for more research that brings together communities and universities in productive ways. The peer-reviewed articles included in this volume take readers through the varied paths by which productive applied research partnerships are developed and nurtured. The articles will be useful to many different groups: academic researchers and community leaders who are new to the applied research arena, faculty members and other experienced applied researchers who are currently engaged in this work, higher education administrators who are seeking a better understanding of the benefits that applied research holds for universities and their communities, community leaders hoping to engage their local colleges and universities, and faculty seeking ways to collaborate on research with local stakeholders."

WK Kellogg Foundation selects 24 groups for

Rural People, Rural Policy Program

CCPH member among those selected for new initiative

The WK Kellogg Foundation has announced funding of 24 organizations, partnerships and alliances to be the first participants in a new multi-year initiative, Rural People, Rural Policy. The program builds on the assets of rural communities. It is a multi-year national initiative to build and strengthen networks of local organizations in developing policy that will help rural communities and small towns.  It intends to grow from the regional networks into a national network of rural organizations and national service groups working on a variety of economic and social issues that impact rural America.   The organizations selected for the first year of Rural People, Rural Policy are listed at http://www.wkkf.org/default.aspx?tabid=75&CID=274&NID=61&LanguageID=0 and include Hazard Perry County Community Ministries of Hazard, Kentucky, led by CCPH member Gerry Roll as executive director.

MESSAGE FROM EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR

Sarena Seifer

Planning for next year’s CCPH conference, April 11-14, 2007 in Toronto ON Canada is underway!  The planning committee is having its first conference call today.  We’re delighted to have confirmed a diverse and enthusiastic group of CCPH members to help guide our 10th anniversary conference!    Their photos and bios will be up on the conference website shortly, but for now we have listed their names and affiliations below.

It's not too early to start planning to participate!

Start drafting a session or poster proposal NOW for presentation at the conference.  The call for proposals will be released in August with an October deadline.

If you're not yet a member of CCPH, join NOW!  CCPH members receive substantial discounts on fees for the conference, training institutes, publications and more!  To read about the many benefits you would receive by becoming a CCPH member, please visit http://depts.washington.edu/ccph/members.html

Join CCPH today online by credit card at www.RegOnline.com/8776 or by check sent along with this form:

http://depts.washington.edu/ccph/pdf_files/Brochure%20Final.pdf

Join us in Toronto for CCPH's 10th anniversary conference,

April 11-14, 2007!

Budget for the conference NOW.  Information about conference registration and lodging rates and scholarship opportunities will appear in the call for proposals.  For fundraising ideas in the meantime, check out the article “8 Ways to Raise $2500 (or more) in 10 days (or less, sometimes)” from the September/October 2003 issue of the Grassroots Fundraising Journal at http://depts.washington.edu/ccph/pdf_files/WaysRaise2500in10Days.pdf. We’re also busy raising funds for scholarships and to keep conference fees to a minimum.  A generous grant from the WK Kellogg Foundation will help to support community-based presenters.

If applicable, make sure you have a valid passport and start the visa application process NOW.  A passport is the ideal identification for United States residents. Citizens born in the U.S. can show a birth certificate, certificate of citizenship or naturalisation, plus photo identification. Permanent residents of the U.S. who are not citizens need to bring their U.S. Permanent Resident Card (‘green card’). Travellers from countries other than the U.S. may require a "Temporary Resident" visa (includes short-term visitors) to enter Canada. Learn more at http://www.cic.gc.ca/english/applications/visa.html.  Visitors should contact the nearest Canadian Embassy or Consulate, or visit Canada International or at http://www.canadainternational.gc.ca/ or call 1-888-242-2100 (from within Canada) or 1-800-992-7037 (from outside Canada) for further information.

The conference planning process is being led by CCPH Administrative Director Annika Sgambelluri.  Ashley Bennion, Project Coordinator at the Wellesley Institute in Toronto, is also providing staff support for the conference. As I wrote about in my last column (http://depts.washington.edu/ccph/PM_062306.html#MessageFromExecDirector), the Wellesley Institute is a major partner in the conference. We established a formal partnership with Wellesley in 2004 that includes co-sponsoring an electronic discussion group on community-based participatory research (subscribe at http://mailman1.u.washington.edu/mailman/listinfo/cbpr), planning a community-based research training institute taking place later this month in Barrie, ON Canada,

increasing the relevance and responsiveness of CCPH to our Canadian owners and planning this conference.  Wellesley is a well-respected organization that advances the social determinants of health through rigorous community-based research, reciprocal capacity building, and the informing of public policy.   Learn more about Wellesley at www.wellesleyinstitute.com!

We welcome any suggestions you may have for next year’s conference.  We’re particularly eager for your ideas on keynote speakers, session topics, exhibitors and funders!  Please send your ideas to annikalr@u.washington.edu

Reports on Cancer Care Quality Measures Are Available

The Agency for Healthcare Quality and Research (AHRQ) released two new evidence reports on quality measures related to the diagnosis, treatment, and care of cancer patients.

(1) “Cancer Care Quality Measures: Symptoms and End of Life Care” was prepared by AHRQ's Southern California Evidence-based Practice Center at RAND in Santa Monica, California, working with investigators from the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs' VA Greater Los Angeles Healthcare System – to read the report, visit
http://www.ahrq.gov/downloads/pub/evidence/pdf/eolcanqm/eolcanqm.pdf

(2) “Cancer Care Quality Measures: Diagnosis and Management of Colorectal Cancer” was prepared by AHRQ's Evidence-based Practice Center at Duke University.  This report concludes that general process measures provide extensive coverage of various "leverage" points in the sequence of care, and that attention should focus on refining existing measures. Technical measures seem less advanced than general process measures. To read the report, visit http://www.ahrq.gov/downloads/pub/evidence/pdf/colocanqm/colocanqm.pdf

Evidence into Policy and Practice?

Measuring the Progress of U.S. and U.K. Policies to Tackle Disparities

and Inequalities in Health and Health Care

The range of tools used to measure progress toward eliminating racial and ethnic disparities in health care is as large as the problems themselves. In a Commonwealth Funded study published in Milbank Quarterly,
researchers led by former Harkness Fellow Mark Exworthy of the University of London analyze efforts under way in the U.S. and U.K. to address disparities, from national public health goals to report cards compiled at every level of the health system. The authors identify what works, while laying out the challenges researchers and policymakers face in devising and using these tools. Ultimately, successful strategies to reduce disparities in health care will depend on the validity of these measurement mechanisms. For more information, visit:
