RACIAL
AND ETHNIC HEALTH DISPARITIES: SCHOOLS
AND GRADUATE PROGRAMS OF PUBLIC HEALTH RESPOND
AS ENGAGED INSTITUTIONS New CCPH Initiative Sponsored by the WK Kellogg
Foundation Click here to learn more! Applications are due October 10, 2005 PLANNED NEW
POSTDOCTORAL FELLOWSHIP PROGRAM COMBINES COMMUNITY, ACADEME,
PRACTICE AND POLICY The
highly successful COMMUNITY HEALTH SCHOLARS and SCHOLARS IN HEALTH
DISPARITIES programs have been planning exciting changes and new linkages. If
you or one of your students is interested in a two-year postdoctoral
experience highlighting research on health disparities, community-based
participatory research or the application of disparities research to policy,
our programs may provide the experience you seek. The
planned new program will offer two-year postdoctoral fellowships at 10
training sites, beginning in Fall 2006.
Seven fellowships will be in the Multidisciplinary Disparities track
and six in the Community-Disparities track. The
first track highlights a multi-disciplinary approach to studying the social
determinants of health disparities.
The other track highlights community-based participatory
research, and relationships between
academe, community and public health practice. The
two programs have proposed to partner with each other and with allies in
policy and practice organizations across the country to create a movement
aimed at eliminating health disparities and securing equal access to the
conditions and services essential for achieving healthy communities. By combining the proven strengths of each
program they intend to create a new, linked program to develop a cadre of
leaders with: the competency to translate research to policies that address
health disparities; the capacity to partner with communities in carrying out
research and building policy advocacy; and the skills to inform and support
policy makers who seek to reduce and eliminate health disparities. The vision
of the proposed new Program embodies the conversion of the traditional
"three-legged stool" (community; academe; practice) of
Community-Based Public Health into a more powerful "four-legged
stool," adding a strong policy leg. The
final decision on funding of this new program awaits action by several
grantors. These programs expect to be
able to make a final announcement and provide application forms in October
2005. The
"Multidisciplinary Disparities" track will be based on the current
Scholars in Health Disparities Program, and training will be provided at the
following sites:
The
"Community-Disparities" track will be based on the current

Articles About Amazing Youth Volunteers A New
Global Institution, the Ellison
Institute at Harvard University, Seeks Candidates for its Global Health Fellows Program Professor Aidan Halligan
Challenged and Captivated Guests at the Inaugural John Horder Lecture Professor
Halligan is the director of Clinical Governance for the NHS. The underlying
reasons for failure in health care were conveyed through stories and images
about power, vanity, professional isolation, poor communication, failures of
communication and ineffective systems. Solutions were woven together as a
myriad of ideas around leadership, teamwork and communication, which he
argued are core elements of effective and patient centered organizations.
Meeting the needs of people, teams and organizations in complex and fast
moving systems requires engaging individuals at a personal as well as
professional level and finding the right sort of leadership that brings
together "judgment and self possession" rather than ego and self
importance. The John Horder lecture has been established as an annual event
supported by the Journal publishers Taylor and Francis to recognize the
leadership and contribution that John has made to influencing change in
policy and practice of interprofessional work and education in the UK and
overseas. The Journal of Interprofessional Care promotes collaboration in
education, practice and research worldwide. It publishes papers on
collaboration within and between professions, within and between organizations,
with service users, carers and communities.
