HOW
CCPH MEMBERS CAN HELP TO REBUILD COMMUNITIES IN THE
AFTERMATH OF HURRICANE KATRINA A Special Report Prepared by Anne Moreau, CCPH Program Assistant As the
immediate threats to life and safety caused by Hurricane Katrina subside,
recovery efforts shift away from rescuing survivors toward preventing further
suffering and restoring normalcy to the lives of those affected. Knowing CCPH members
will want to help in the rebuilding of those communities devastated by the
Hurricane and its aftermath, we compiled a list of websites that offer
guidance on how you can get involved. We’ve narrowed our list to those sites
we thought would be of most benefit to our members, including those that
emphasize community-campus partnerships, service-learning, and public health. The US Department of Health and
Human Services
has established a website - https://volunteer.hhs.gov
and toll-free number (1-866-KAT MEDI) to help identify health care
professionals and relief personnel to assist in Hurricane
Katrina relief efforts. US DHHS Centers for Disease Control
and Prevention - has established an Emergency
Preparedness and Response Website - http://www.bt.cdc.gov/disasters/hurricanes/. Pages offer resources on hurricane
preparedness, clean-up and recovery, in addition to general and clinical fact
sheets for managing injuries that result from severe weather. Several fact
sheets are available in a variety of languages including English, Vietnamese,
Spanish and Creole. National Service-Learning
Clearinghouse - http://www.servicelearning.org
has collected resources and tools to help students and teachers develop a
service-learning or community service project to assist with the Hurricane
Katrina relief effort. Included are organizations to join; lesson plans on
fundraising, hurricanes, floods, and the culture of the areas affected; and
stories of what students are doing to help. An opportunity to submit ideas
and stories regarding the relief effort is also included. Visit http://www.servicelearning.org/nslc/hurricane_katrina/index.php. American Public Health
Association - http://www.apha.org has a wealth of information
for those who want to get involved in the recovery efforts, including links
to websites of organizations that are coordinating volunteers, relevant
chapters from “Public Health Management of Disasters, 2nd Edition” by Linda
Landesman and information on how medical and public health professionals can
volunteer. Campus Compact- http://www.compact.org/ has a discussion board
where people from colleges and universities can share information about
student and campus disaster relief efforts, news about what schools are doing
in response to the hurricane, and resources for donations. Campusrelief.org - http://www.campusrelief.org/
was created by the American Council on Education and the National Association
of College and University Business Officers as an information clearinghouse
for both institutions and students as recovery from Katrina continues. The site includes a state-by-state list of campuses
offering classroom spots to displaced students and a list of campuses
affected by the storm. USA FreedomCorps - http://www.usafreedomcorps.gov/ has information on how to donate
or volunteer goods or services. We
close with a set of suggestions from CCPH member Lyvier Conss, Executive
Director, Community College National Center for Community
Engagement: "Faculty in every discipline can develop
service-learning initiatives to help with the hurricane relief while at the
same time address the social, medical, economic and moral impact this
hurricane will have not only in the affected states but throughout the United
States and the world. Some ideas on how to help with hurricane relief would
be the following:
PRESIDENT’S
CANCER PANEL MAKES RECOMMENDATIONS ABOUT COMMUNITY PARTICIPATION IN RESEARCH With
passage of the National Cancer Act of 1971 (P.L. 92-218), a promise was made
to the American people to conduct the
full spectrum of research and related activities necessary to prevent,
control, and cure cancers. The President's Cancer Panel, established by the
National Cancer Act, is charged to monitor and evaluate the National Cancer
Program (NCP) and to report at least annually to the President of the United
States on impediments to the fullest execution of the program. The
2004-2005 Annual Report of the President's Cancer Panel, released in June
2005, makes a number of recommendations about community participation
research, including CBPR:

interest in improving town/gown relations. Essentially, the Panel accepts occasional queries from SCUP, for
example: "What's the most interesting thing you've read recently about

medical students do not think medical schools are adequately preparing them
for the future, the American Medical Student Association reports. According
to an AMSA survey of 322 students, more than a quarter said they were not
provided education on health disparities, more than a third were not required
to study medical ethics, and more than half were not offered courses in
bioterrorism or disaster preparedness. Only 17% were very satisfied with the
curricula, the organization said. "It is a constant challenge for
medical schools to teach the traditional medical curriculum while also
incorporating new, timely topics," said AMSA President Leana Wen.
"However, it is absolutely necessary that medical schools recognize this
challenge and strive to develop physicians who can effectively provide care
in this modern health care environment." Additional information Service Learning DVD The
University of Utah’s Bennion Center has produced an interactive resource
guide for those involved in service-learning. The DVD contains a series
of PowerPoint presentations that are written for multiple audiences: faculty,
administrators, community partners, and students. For more information
