University of
Pennsylvania Renames its Center for Community Partnerships in Honor of
Major Donor
Excerpted from the Almanac -
October 2, 2007, Volume 54, No. 6
The University of Pennsylvania will name its Center for Community
Partnerships for Edward Netter, a 1953 graduate of Penn’s College, and his
wife, Barbara, in recognition of their commitments of more than $10
million. CCPH
member Ira Harkavy directs the Center.
”One of Penn’s great strengths lies in our ability to work hand-in-hand
with our West Philadelphia neighbors to improve lives,” President Amy
Gutmann said. “This extraordinarily generous gift from Barbara and Edward
Netter
will enable Penn students, faculty and staff to deepen and expand this creative
and dynamic partnership. The Barbara and Edward Netter Center for Community
Partnerships will greatly enhance Penn’s ability to make a
difference in our West Philadelphia community while creating new knowledge that
can benefit communities everywhere.”
Since its 1992 founding, the Center has been a catalyst for the transformation
of West Philadelphia from a declining neighborhood to one with a promising
future. The Center directs the talents and idealism of thousands of Penn
students in addressing problems of schools, health care, childhood obesity,
environmental hazards, unemployment and economic decline. The Penn faculty
teaches more than 50 courses a year that engage students with the
community, enriching their academic experience as well as benefiting the
neighborhood they serve. This type of academic work led to the development
of the university-assisted community schools model which had not previously
existed, one that research is finding to be effective, cost efficient and
of proven success.
Part of the Netters’ gift will
be used to replicate nationally the success of the Center’s widely
recognized university-assisted community school programs. Such programs
involve more than 6,000 children and youth, parents and community members
at six sites in West Philadelphia. Twenty-two colleges and
universities in the U.S. have developed their own community-schools
programs based on the Penn approach. Teams from an
additional 75 higher-education institutions have been trained on the model.
Mr. Netter is the chairman and chief executive officer of Geneve Corporation,
a private diversified holding company in Stamford, Connecticut. His wife, a psychotherapist, has been
involved in education for many years. Both serve on the Center’s National
Advisory Board and have helped the Center over the past several years to
grow and develop through their ideas and support.

Tulane Project
Preserves Spice of a Neighborhood
Excerpted from the ASPH Friday Letter, September 21,
2007
The
team of Tulane University public health students that began hosting a food
pantry in St. Augustine's Church for people returning after Hurricane
Katrina has expanded into a new project called Treme's Cookin'. The program
is dedicated to building community spirit around the food and cuisine of
Treme residents.
Recent events included a gumbo cook-off and a tasting featuring the
Sicilian recipes of Treme women. Ms. Bethany Bultman, co-founder of the New
Orleans Musicians' Clinic, is a key partner and New Orleans food legend Ms.
Leah Chase of Dooky Chase restaurant is a featured chef.
"I hope to turn Treme's Cookin' into a women's empowerment project.
Much of the notable cuisine from the Treme comes from women," said Dr.
Nancy Mock, an international health researcher in the Tulane School of
Public Health and Tropical Medicine, who spearheads the project along with
Dean Pierre Buekens. "We hope to create business opportunities for
women to enter into executive levels of the restaurant and catering
business."
The group plans cooking and nutrition classes taught by the older women of
Treme, a historic neighborhood bounded by Rampart Street on the south,
Broad Street to the north, Canal Street on the west and Esplanade Avenue on
the east. Teams also will provide food outreach, helping low-income
households plan and cook nutritious meals at home.
"Treme's Cookin' represents a double entendre," Dr. Mock
explained. "The neighborhood is cookin' through cooking. We wanted to
assist the recovery by building on heritage."
Dr. Mock referred to the neighborhood as "the epicenter of jazz and
food in New Orleans." Treme, dating back to the early 1800s, is
thought to be one of the first neighborhoods for free people of color in
the United States. According to Dr. Mock, the neighborhood has a long
history of contributions to the arts, music and literature, as well as
food.
Treme is also home to the self-sustaining, benevolent social aid and
pleasure clubs that organize second-line parades and jazz funerals, among
other community functions. Treme's Cookin' was developed in response to
surveys of food pantry clients, who asked for new foods and more
opportunities to socialize over food. The French Consulate donated seed
money to found the project.
In the future, the group hopes to create a cookbook including neighborhood
recipes, culture and history.

MESSAGE FROM OUR EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR
As we transition our organizational home and leadership over the next
year,* we have decided not to convene
a major CCPH conference in 2008. In lieu of our own major conference, we
are delighted to be a core sponsor of the third Community-University
Exposition (CUexpo), May 4-7, 2008 in Victoria, British Columbia,
Canada. We encourage CCPH members
to adopt the CUexpo conference “as their own” and fully participate in
it.
In convening the conference, the United Way of Victoria and the
University of Victoria recognize that “bringing the resources,
dreams, assets and issues of our communities and our post-secondary
institutions together is a movement that is building.” The conference theme of
“Community-University Partnerships: Connecting for Change,” the
value it places on these partnerships as a strategy for positive change in
communities, and its goals of celebrating, supporting and networking
partnerships across the globe, are ideally aligned with CCPH. CCPH members Budd Hall and Maeve Lydon
of the Office of Community-Based Research at the University of Victoria
serve on the conference planning committee.
The conference organizers have graciously reserved prominent spots in the program for
CCPH:
§
The 2008 CCPH Award will be presented at the conference. This annual award highlights the power and
potential of community-campus partnerships as a strategy for social justice
by recognizing an exemplary partnership that others can aspire to. Two partnership representatives will
accept the award on behalf of the partnership at CCPH’s expense. Nominations are due February 12,
2008. For details, visit http://depts.washington.edu/ccph/awards.html
§
CCPH
members and prospective members will gather for a CCPH discussion and
reception on Monday evening May 5, 2008.
§
CCPH
will display our latest programs and publications in the exhibit hall.
Session proposals are due November 15, 2007. There are a wide variety of formats to
choose from, including workshops, round-tables, stories, arts-based research
exhibitions and posters. Learn more
at http://www.cuexpo08.ca/index.html
We look forward to seeing you in
Victoria next Spring!
