National Institute of Mental Health Announces Funding for CBPR

The National Institute of Mental Health has just released this program announcement:

Community-Based Participatory Research at NIMH (R21)

http://grants.nih.gov/grants/guide/pa-files/PAR-07-004.html

The ultimate goal of this funding is to support research partnerships between community-based, clinical/services settings and research institutions to reduce the burden of mental illness, behavioral disorders and HIV/AIDS through research on mind, brain, and behavior.  It seeks to fund work with these goals in mind:
(1) Increase knowledge base through research-community partnerships
(2) Improve outcomes through research-community partnerships
(3) Capacity building through research-community partnerships
(4) Enhance dissemination through research-community partnerships

The announcement uses the NIH Exploratory/Developmental (R21) award mechanism An announcement that solicits applications under the Research Project Grant (R01) mechanism will be issued at a later date.  R01 applications may only be submitted by awardees of this R21 funding announcement. The R01 application must build on, and further develop the pilot research, resources, and collaborations developed in the R21.

In addition to the standard NIH review criteria, this additional criteria will be considered in the determination of scientific merit and the priority score:

"Infrastructure and Partnership: Is there specificity in the infrastructure plans that are tailored to the organizations involved, the nature of the partnership and the research aims? Are the infrastructure aims informed by a conceptual framework and/or theory? Do they propose an assessment or evaluation of the implementation and communication successes and failures within the partnership and the infrastructure? Will the knowledge gained about infrastructure development and the partnership be transferable to other sectors? Are there plans to assure the sustainability of the infrastructure after the grant is over?"

The complete announcement is available at:
http://grants.nih.gov/grants/guide/pa-files/PAR-07-004.html

ANNUAL REPORT TO THE NATION FINDS CANCER DEATH RATES CONTINUE TO DROP; LOWER CANCER RATES OBSERVED IN U.S. LATINO POPULATIONS

A new report from the nation's leading cancer organizations finds that Americans' risk of dying from cancer continues to drop, maintaining a trend that began in the early 1990s. However, the rate of new cancers
remains stable. The "Annual Report to the Nation on the Status of Cancer, 1975-2003, Featuring Cancer among U.S. Hispanic/Latino Populations" is published in the October 15, 2006, issue of "Cancer".

The report includes comprehensive data on trends over the past several decades for all major cancers. It shows that the long-term decline in overall cancer death rates continued through 2003 for all races and both
sexes combined. The declines were greater among men (1.6 percent per year from 1993 through 2003) than women (0.8 percent per year from 1992 through 2003), although rates for men remain 46 percent higher than for women.

Death rates decreased for 11 of the 15 most common cancers in men and for 10 of the 15 most common cancers in women. The authors attribute the decrease in death rates, in part, to successful efforts to reduce
exposure to tobacco, earlier detection through screening, and more effective treatment, saying that continued success will depend on maintaining and enhancing these efforts.

"The greater decline in cancer death rates among men is due in large part to their substantial decrease in tobacco use. We need to enhance efforts to reduce tobacco use in women so that the rate of decline in
cancer death rates becomes comparable to that of men," said Betsy A. Kohler, President of the North American Association of Central Cancer Registries, Inc (NAACCR).

Overall cancer incidence rates (the rate at which new cancers are diagnosed) for both sexes and all races combined have been stable from 1992 through 2003. Overall rates for men were stable from 1995 through
2003, while rates for women increased from 1979 through 2003. Notably, incidence rates for female breast cancer stabilized from 2001 through 2003, ending increases that began in the 1980s. Whether this first
indication of a changing trend is real or a random fluctuation cannot be determined until data reporting in the next few years is complete. Also, the data suggest a small increase in the female lung cancer incidence
rate from 1991 through 2003, which is a much slower rate of increase than in prior years.

MESSAGE FROM EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR

Sarena Seifer

We are delighted by the enthusiastic response we have received to the CCPH 10th anniversary conference, our first held in Canada!
The conference, “Mobilizing Partnerships for Social Change,” takes place April 11-14, 2007 in Toronto.  We received over 450
session proposals for the conference, including 400 from the US and Canada, and 50 from other countries including Australia,
Bangladesh
, Cameroon, Finland, Germany, India, Pakistan, Philippines, the Republic of South Africa, Sri Lanka, Uganda, the UK
and Zambia.   In addition, many organizations have joined with CCPH and the Wellesley Institute (our major Canadian
partner
for the conference) as cosponsors,
exhibitors and supporters (for details, see:
http://depts.washington.edu/ccph/conf-coexhibit.html).
With its emphasis on partnerships that address the root causes of health, social and economic inequalities, we expect participants from
across the health, education, human rights and social service sectors who are working in urban, suburban and rural settings.

We hope you are already planning to participate in the conference!  CCPH conferences are noted for their emphasis on inclusion, experiential
learning and subsequent action.  The conference is designed to encourage active participation by all participants through a variety of session
formats, including skill-building workshops, story sessions, thematic posters, community site visits, exhibits, and peer and interest group meetings.
The conference also features many opportunities for informal conversation and networking.

Participants from this year’s CCPH Conference

Here’s what participants from this year’s CCPH conference had to say:

”It was one of the greatest conferences I have ever attended, especially as a small not-for-profit organization. It taught me that there are many opportunities for organizations such as ours to establish partnerships with universities.”

”It was so exciting to see how many people are interested in this field. As an academic I found it was a delight to speak with some of the many community activists who were there, in addition to many academic colleagues -- new and old.”

“It's a great conference for community partners - a place where we feel valued and heard and where we are not apt to become lost in academic culture.”

”I would say that it was the best conference I have attended.  The ambience was welcoming and the people seemed very friendly--which is a reflection of what community research is all about.

”The CCPH was truly a wonderful experience and I networked with so many individuals.  The best conference I have attended!”
