AWARD HONORING COMMUNITY LEADERS IN COMMUNITY-BASED PUBLIC HEALTH

CCPH Board Chair Emeritus Elmer Freeman Receives Inaugural Lucille Webb Award

 

CCPH Board Chair Emeritus Elmer Freeman was honored on November 5 with the inaugural Lucille Webb Award presented annually by the National Community-Based Organization Network to an individual who exemplifies community leadership in community-based public health.   Elmer is Executive Director of the Center for Community Health, Education, Research and Service (also CCHERS, known as “Cheers”).  CCHERS started in 1991 and is a partnership between Northeastern University Bouve College of Health Sciences and fifteen community health centers serving the diverse racial and ethnic populations of the City of Boston.  Prior to joining CCHERS, Elmer served for 16 years as Executive Director of the Whittier Street Health Center in Roxbury, MA.  Elmer is pursuing this doctoral degree in law and policy at Northeastern University.  Elmer served as Chair of the CCPH board and just completed two 3-year terms as a board member.

 

CCPH Member Lucille Webb has spent the last 20 years as a community health advocate volunteer devoting countless hours to helping others, working on boards, commissions, task forces and networking with organizations to plan, implement and monitor programs that impact health, family life and education.  She is a founding member and president of Strengthening the Black Family, Inc., a nonprofit community-based networking organization and chairwoman of the Executive Committee of Project DIRECT (Diabetes Interventions Reaching and Educating Communities Together), a CDC funded research demonstration project.  She represented her community-based organization with the WK Kellogg Community-Based Public Health Initiative and serves as the first president of the North Carolina Consortium.  Membership on the National Association of City and County Health Officials MAPP (Mobilizing for Action through Planning and Partnerships) Work Group provided the opportunity to be the community voice for the community’s health.  Lucille is a retired social studies teacher and personnel administrator of the Wake County North Carolina School System.  She holds a master’s degree in education and is certified by the North Carolina Department of Public Instruction in Education Administration and Supervision.  She notes, “My philosophy is not about aging, but about living well, having an impact on the community and giving back.”

Lynton Award Winners for Faculty Professional Service

and Academic Outreach Announced

CCPH Partner Barbara Israel Recognized With Honorable Mention

 

The New England Resource Center for Higher Education (NERCHE) at the University of Massachusetts Boston celebrated the 10th Anniversary of the Ernest A. Lynton Award for Faculty Professional Service and Academic Outreach at the 12th Annual International Conference of the Coalition of Urban and Metropolitan Universities (CUMU) in Coral Gables, Florida on October 23. This year, the Award honored three recipients, Glynda Hull, Professor of Language, Literacy, and Culture in the Graduate School of Education at the University of California, Berkeley; Julia Lupton, Professor of English and Comparative Literature at the University of California, Irvine; and Katherine O’Donnell, Professor of Sociology at Hartwick College, who presented their work to an audience of presidents, provosts and other administrators from colleges and universities from across the nation.   Learn more about the exemplary community-engaged scholars at http://www.nerche.org/Lynton_Award/lynton_award.html

In 1996 NERCHE created the Ernest A. Lynton Award for Faculty Professional Service and Academic Outreach to recognize faculty members who connect their expertise and scholarship to community outreach. The Award honors exceptional faculty who have educated their students to make a socially meaningful imprint on an increasingly complex world. They are role models, not only for students, but also for their colleagues and their institutions seeking to find ways to connect the rich resources of the academy with the local and global community. The Award also pays tribute to the memory of Ernest Lynton, who served as the academic vice president for the University of Massachusetts’ three-campus system. Dr. Lynton’s work championed a vision of service that embraced collective responsibility and a vision of colleges and universities as catalysts not only in the discovery of new knowledge but also in its application throughout society.

NERCHE also announced two Honorable Mentions for the Lynton Award: Barbara Israel, Professor in the Department of Health Behavior and Health Education in School of Public Health at University of Michigan and Elizabeth Paul, Associate Professor of Psychology at The College of New Jersey.

Earlier this year NERCHE established a partnership with CUMU to offer the Ernest A. Lynton Award for Faculty Professional Service and Academic Outreach. NERCHE will continue to be the Lynton Award home, and will also be primarily responsible for the selection of the annual award winner and finalists. The award will be presented each year at the annual CUMU national conference, where the finalists will present sessions on their work.

lessons learned from the health professions partnership initiative

Partnerships Between K-12 School Systems, Colleges and Community Members

 

A supplement to the June 2006 issue of the journal Academic Medicine features articles and case studies that represent the culmination of nearly a decade’s experience with the Health Professions Partnership Initiative (HPPI), a unique system of 26 collaborative sites – involving K-12 school systems, colleges, and community members – intended to bolster academic achievement and promote enrollment in medical school by racial and ethnic minority students. The HPPI project was made possible by funds from the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation (RWJF) and W.K. Kellogg Foundation, and its national program office was housed in the Division of Diversity Policy and Programs at Association of American Medical Colleges.

 

The intent in publishing this supplement is to broadly disseminate scholarship and experiential knowledge of pipeline programs so that others may learn from the challenges and successes and initiate or strengthen pipeline programs of their own. The record of leadership and creativity involved in these complex partnerships is a contribution to the literature in its own right. MESSAGE FROM OUR ADMINISTRATIVE DIRECTOR

In September, I had the opportunity to participate in The Network: Towards Unity For Health’s (TUFH) International Conference, “Improving Social Accountability in Education, Research and Service Delivery,” in Ghent, Belgium. The Network:TUFH is a non-governmental organization in official relationships with the World Health Organization and is based at Maastricht University in the Netherlands. Founded in 1979, it is a global association of institutions for education of health professionals committed to contribute, through education, research and service, to the improvement and sustainment of health in the communities they serve.

 

As many will recall, in October 2004, CCPH and The Network:TUFH jointly sponsored an international conference in Atlanta, Georgia USA that explored how partnerships can overcome health disparities.  For more information, visit http://depts.washington.edu/ccph/guide.html#Conf2004

This year The Network:TUFH collaborated with the Department of Family Practice and Primary Health Care in cooperation with the Faculty of Medicine and Health Sciences of Ghent University to host its conference in Belgium. The conference kicked off at the Aula Academia with opening keynotes on social accountability in education by Frank Vandenbroucke of Belgium and the European perspective on International Cooperation by Lieve Fransen, also of Belgium. A highlight of the conference was a plenary keynote on promoting equitable distribution of human resources for health by Yoswa Mbulalina Dambisya of the Republic of South Africa. This keynote addressed the growing consensus that migration and shortage of human resources for health is a human rights issue, and a global crisis. Human resources for health will be the theme of The Network:TUFH’s 2007 international conference, September 15-20, 2007 in Uganda. Additional highlights include the participation of students from Ghent University, community site visits, and a post-conference visit to one of the problem-based learning founders, the Faculty of Medicine, Maastricht University in the Netherlands. Maastricht University also houses the office of The Network:TUFH.

By attending The Network:TUFH's conference I was able to meet people from all over the world and learn about the incredible work that they are doing. As an exhibitor, I was also able to educate participants on CCPH’s many activities and recruit new members for CCPH’s member network. Cross-cultural exchanges and collaborations can be some of the most rewarding experiences and I would encourage CCPH members to attend one of The Network:TUFH's conferences to experience these firsthand. CCPH and The Network:TUFH are discussing the possibility of hosting another joint conference in the future, and exploring other mutually beneficial collaborations between our organizations.

Curriculum on Developing and Sustaining CBPR Partnerships Now Available Online!

 

Developing and Sustaining Community-Based Participatory Research Partnerships: A Skill-Building Curriculum, is now available online at www.cbprcurriculum.info The curriculum was developed by the Community-Institutional Partnerships for Prevention Research Group, a collaboration involving 9 organizations in the US and Canada, including CCPH. Curriculum development and pilot-testing was funded by the Prevention Research Center Program Office at the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention through a cooperative agreement with the Association of Schools of Public Health. Generous funding from the Wellesley Institute enabled the curriculum to be made available online.

 

 

 

CCPH Advocates for Increased NIH Support for

Community-Based Participatory Research

Opportunity to Serve on NIH Council of Public Representatives – December 15 Deadline

 

CCPH executive director Sarena Seifer made recommendations for how the National Institutes of Health can boost its support for CBPR during the NIH Council of Public Representatives (COPR) Meeting on November 3. The purpose of this three-week certificate is to develop the capacity of mid to senior level development practitioners to employ sustainable asset-based approaches which recognize the everyday experience, wisdom, skills and capacity that exist in all communities. The Certificate will examine approaches such as Appreciative Inquiry, Asset-Based Community Development, the Asset-Building Framework and the Sustainable Livelihoods Approach which can help communities to mobilize, restore and further develop their internal assets as a means of addressing fundamental issues such as poverty and injustice. UNC School of Public Health Online Certificate in Field Epidemiology –
The Certificate in Field Epidemiology is a 12-credit hour program of study. The curriculum addresses the core functions of outbreak investigation, surveillance systems and methods, infectious disease epidemiology, and field epidemiology methods. All courses have been specially designed and developed for delivery via the Internet. Most grant announcements requesting applications have closed. This is a good time of the year to review the White House Grants Catalog to identify opportunities that your organization may be eligible to compete for next fiscal year. CCPH participates in the Outreach Partnership Program, a nationwide outreach initiative of the National Institute of Mental Health (NIMH) that is designed to help close the gap between mental health research and clinical practice, inform the public about mental illnesses, and reduce the stigma and discrimination associated with mental illness. provide faculty leadership and mentorship within individual colleges and the university at large, (2) engage a
greater number of faculty in HEI-related research, (3) promote cross-college curricular innovations on issues

of the program are to support and promote: research that will help develop policy in areas of concern to

The National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH)/ Center for Disease Control and Prevention

training. TPGs are programs at academic institutions that provide training in the core occupational safety and
health areas of industrial hygiene, occupational health nursing, occupational medicine residency occupational

 Call for Submissions: Journal of Hispanic Higher Education – Deadline: May 1, 2007Submissions are being accepted for a special issue focused on matters related to the Hispanic student and second language acquisition. This issue is tentatively titled, "Hispanic Students and Second Language Acquisition: Closing the Language Gap." It is expected that the articles will deepen readers' understanding of programs of instruction, assessment, and policies that relate to or directly impact the education of Hispanic English language learners, as well as inform reflective and transformational practitioners in how to best address their needs. Pursuing Opportunities Through Partnerships: Higher Education and Communities

In 1998, the W.W. Kellogg Foundation provided funding for four universities to collaborate with surrounding communities on mutually beneficial projects, through the Expanding Community Partnerships Program. In a series of innovative learning collaborations, East Tennessee University, the University of Texas at El Paso, West Virginia University, and Northeastern University established strong, sustainable partnerships with organizations in their local communities.

Although each university approached its partnering differently, they all shared the goal of benefiting the underserved communities where they are located and transforming their institutions by enhancing students’ educational experiences and strengthening faculty, student, administration, and staff relationships with local residents. This book shares those relationship-building experiences of the four universities and communities.

The Research Process in the Human Services: Behind the Scenes
