| Family Experience Study |

Project Participants: Donald Patrick, PhD, MSPH, Principal Investigator;

The aims of this study are: - To develop, pretest and pilot a diary-based
method, the Daily Diary of Events and Behaviors (DDEB), for recording the experience of daily
symptoms, behaviors, and events reported by the primary caregiver of youth (7-18 years) with a
clinical diagnosis of Attention Deficit and/or Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD);
- To assess
the adequacy of the diary to provide measures of family experience, including the frequency,
time-of-day, and bothersomeness of observable ADHD behaviors and events, and the amount of time
free from these experiences;
- To assess the experience of living with ADHD from
adolescents’ perspective by comparing self-reported quality of life scores among adolescents
diagnosed with ADHD to those whose physicians verify that they do not have ADHD;
- To
develop and pilot a questionnaire measure of tangible effects (such as time spent caring for
youth with ADHD and job absenteeism), and intangible effects (such as family stress and foregone
career opportunities) of raising youth with ADHD; and
- To estimate the frequency of direct
nonmedical costs experienced by the family, such as remedial education and tutoring.
We completed a pilot study in July 2002 with 25 ADHD and 15 Control families, and are in the
process of preparing a methodology proposal to complete validation of the DDEB.
